Hi Rob, Sam Maguire's family lived in the same townland in Co. Cork for over two hundred years. Sam went to London and worked for the British civil service beginning in 1900 and returned to Ireland (Dublin) after the Irish War of Independence to help establish the Irish civil service. He was a close friend of Michael Collins. His family was Church of Ireland (Anglican) and he was very closely involved with the GAA (the Gaelic Athletic Association) during his time in England as well as when he returned to Ireland. That's why the Sam Maguire cup was named after him after his death. What Maguire's are you looking for in County Mayo? Maguire is a fairly common surname in Ireland. Do you have a location of birth? There's a list of the names of all the towns and townlands in the county at the Ireland Townland Database http://www.seanruad.com Oceanstrands --- On Wed, 4/8/09, robert inman <rvdinman@mts.net> wrote: > From: robert inman <rvdinman@mts.net> > Subject: Re: [IRL-MAYO] Sam Maguire > To: irl-mayo@rootsweb.com > Date: Wednesday, April 8, 2009, 4:05 PM > Hi. > Thanks for your prompt reply. > Yes, I am tracing Maguire ancestors in Mayo, > but having some > problems. Hi! I am trying to trace the maternal side of my father's family. I have found that Maguire is a terrifically common name in Mayo!! Also with differing spellings-McGuire and McQuire. I am working on the following: James Maguire(McQuire) b. abt 1835 or 1837 Mayo , married Apr-Jun 1864 Durham to Julia Ann Quin b. abt 1844 poss Co. Cork. James parents were Hugh Maguire (McGuire) b. abt 1817 Mayo, married abt 1838 Cork to Margaret Biggan b. abt 1820 Mayo. They migrated to England abt 1848. Julia Ann had a sister Mary A b. abt 1843 poss Cork. Their parents were ? Quin and Julia Quin b. abt 1825 Ireland. They were living in 1861 on Henry Street, Barton Upon Irwell, Lancashire. Julia (the mother) poss died 1865 in Durham. That is about all I know of these families thus far. Best regards, rob Oceanstrands wrote: > Hi Rob, > > Sam Maguire's family lived in the same townland in Co. Cork for over two hundred years. Dear Meg. Thank you Thank you!! I truly appreciate your lookup on my Maguires. It was great getting the proper dates on each person. I would love to figure the town that the Maguires came from in Mayo. Any suggestions how I can go that one step further back? Again, thanks!
