On 1911 Census he is living in Belfast, born 1861/62 (est)in Co Cork. Alexander Gilbert is a witness on John's marriage certificate (1889, Belfast). I assume this to be a brother. His father is stated as John, a teacher. I found a reference to a marriage of John Sheridan Gilbert and Eliza Cannon in Belfast in 1856. The Cannon link made me wonder if these are John C's parents. My father told me that his Grandfather (John snr) was a teacher in Balina on the West Coast of Ireland. I found a John Gilbert listed as a classical teacher, in the 1881 directory of Ballina. How John C came to be born in Co Cork (1862 /-1)if his parents were married in Belfast (1856), and then were in Co Mayo working (1881), I'm not sure. What I'm missing is the links between all these bits of information. I'm hoping your email linked to this site is still active.
