Hello TaffyMcGarry, I too have ancestors who left Mayo in the 1883 time frame that I suspect left under the free emigration scheme. But I am unaware of the ‘notes’ that you mentioned in your post. I would love to read those notes-is it on microfilm by the LDS, in book form, or something else? All the names you mention and the date are familiar. Can I guess that your relative was Catherine and she went to Chicage in 1926? I am the son of Patrick, who went to Birmingham, England. John Michael lived in Aughoose at the time of his marriage to Ann. Patrick McGarry and Maggy O'Donnell were their witnesses. They had 11 children but 6 of those are unknown to me and died prior to 1900. The other 5 are: John James 1872-1933, Michael Francis 1874-1974, James Patrick 1876-1947, Thomas William 1879-1949 all born in Mayo and Mary Ann 1885-1943 born in the USA. John and Ann immigrated to the US in 1883 with the 4 boys and settled in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. The Irish Free Emigration notes that John left his land holdings to an Anthony McGarry. Hoping any of these names ring a bell with someone. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I tried rootsireland.ie for children and John and Ann in Kiltane and came up empty. However, the civil birth index on familysearch shows lots of possibilities in Belmullet district for the years in question. In 1882 alone, where you have a gap, there's a Mary and Bridget. You could get for 5 euros each from the GRO, $2 each (for those before 1882) from the LDS. Diane Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
