The fact that your grandmother lived in a rural area but attended city schools makes you wonder if one of her parents contributed to her education, perhaps anonymously. Another very long shot, but you might try posting to the Moran board or list in the hopes that a descendant of one of Elizabeth's siblings might recognize the story.
