    1. [IRL-MAYO] Need a little help navigating Griffiths Valuations
    2. Hi all, I am researching my great-grandfather, Thomas Loughney. I know he arrived in the US about 1865, and was born Dec 1842 in Ireland. Thomas had 2 sons born in the US, John Joseph and Patrick. I have been searching the Griffith's valuations on http://www.askaboutireland.ie, and have found a bunch of Loughney's but spelled Loghney, which I assume is a transcription error. I noticed that there are a number of Thomas Loghney's: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&Submit.x=0&Submit.y=0&Submit=Submit&familyname=loghney&firstname=thomas&baronyname=&countyname=&unionname=&parishname= KILCUMMIN, KILCUMMIN; BALLYGARRY, KILCUMMIN; CARROWTRASNA KILCUMMIN; Upper KEELOGES, LACKAN; Lower KEELOGES, LACKAN; LECARROWNTEMPLE, LACKAN; KILLOGEARY, LACKAN I am also cross-referencing John's as well as John is very common in my family (considering my grandfather was John Joseph, my father was John Thomas, and I am John Alexander (Alexander is both my maternal grandfather's middle name as well as my godfather's name)) - I am assuming that there is a high likelihood that John at least his father's name or brother's name. John Loghney was listed in: KILCUMMIN, KILCUMMIN; KILCUMMIN, KILCUMMIN; CARROWTRASNA, KILCUMMIN; CARROWTRASNA, KILCUMMIN My questions are: 1) the left most column of the pages have a number, are these essentially a 'lot' number? 2) the 2nd leftmost column has letters, and if they are a, b, etc. - can I assume these are multiple houses/cabins on the same lot? 3) can I also assume people living on the same lot most likely were family? 4) Would my great grandfather at age 14 be too young to be listed on the Valuation? Even if, for example, his father died? 5) In the Valuations, there are some curly brackets in the 2nd left column. Can I assume these indicate grouping? 6) I have seen some people referencing 'tranditional' naming practices for male children in the area, but haven't seen the 'rules' - anyone have pointers? 7) Any other suggestions? Tracking down this information is quite vexing, so I am open to any suggestions! Thanks! John
