    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: patrickjhynes Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/8684.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Griffith's Valuation of Ireland (performed 1855-1857 for Mayo)lists only one landholder named Edward Brogan in County Mayo. This Edward Brogan held land and a home in Tobermore (aka Tobbermore)townland, Crossmolina parish at that time. Other records obtained from the book "History of Crossmolina" by Tony Donohoe show that an Edward Brogan held land in Tobermore townland from the earliest recorded date of 1834 until sometime after 1870. By 1893, his land had been transferred to a Patrick Brogan who was likely Edward's son. This Patrick Brogan held the land until at least 1913. In more modern times, this land was held by a John Brogan and later transferred to a James Barrett. The total land holding of Edward Brogan in Tobermore was slightly less than 21 Irish acres and included a house and outbuildings. Edward Brogan also had a small land holding in neighboring Polladoohy townland. Tobermore and Polladoohy townlands are about two miles west of the town of Crossmolina. Th! e presummed son, Patrick Brogan, should appear on the 1901 and 1911 Ireland census. This Edward Brogan appears to be the brother of a John Brogan who also held land and a house in Tobermore as well as land in Polladoohy begining in the 1830's. This John Brogan had moved his home and the total of his land holdings to Polladoohy by 1870. This John Brogan had two sons (Edward and John) who survived him and took over his land holdings in Polladoohy. His son Edward Brogan (b. 1843)married my grandfather's sister so I have information on his family line if you are interested. The Catholic Church baptism records for Crossmolia parish begin in the 1830's but have numerous gaps. There may have been two Catholic church buildings in the parish at times and baptisms for only one may have survived for some years. There are a few marriage records surviving but they are mostly from the late 1850's & 1860's and not much for later years. Church death records are basically non-existant for most of the 1800's. There are two cemeteries in the parish, one at Kilmurray and a new newer cemetery in town at Crossmolina. There are few readable grave markers before 1900. The book "History of Crossmolina" also lists some other records for Tobermore townland such as: John McGowan and Mary Brogan, married 28th January 1854; Martin Flaherty and Mary Brogan, married 15th February 1857; and James Brogan and Cate Gordon, married 14 February 1858. These entries suggest that there may an additional generation hidden in these records such that the original Edward Brogan listed may not have been the father of your Catherine (born 1852) but her grandfather who had a son Edward who was born in the same time frame as the Marys and James listed above. If you think that this might be your Catherine's family or have questions, e-mail me at patrick.j.hynes@comcast.net. I have done some research in the area as well as visited Brogan cousins in Polladoohy townland and may have some suggestions or material that would help. Author: maryellenchambers Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/8684.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Start with the USA data. Census - Start with 1920 census and work back toward her year of arrival; ie when she still used BROGAN. Then move forward. What was her address before marriage and does census show oher relatives/siblings. Death Certificate: DAta only as good as person who supplied the information but in most COD, the deceased parents and address are listed instead of just "Ireland". Marriage: When did Iowa start using marriage license?? You may find information there. Also, if RC contact church for sacramental data. Tell them you want ALL the info listed not just the standard info which is couple's name, date, sponsors and priest. In many RC churches, the parents of bride and/or groom and address are listed, just not on the offical certificate. Since she expired after women got the right to vote, did she apply for citzenship?? The 20th century applications are a fount of data. Civil War pension: was her husband old enough to be in the American Civil War. That application has a great deal of data re: the man & family. Newspaper: If she lived in a small town, check the weekly newspaper for family data. The Society page in small towns can be a great help. Since she was born before Civil Records in Ireland, you would need to know the townland/village, you have the father's name, some siblings names would help, religion and landlord name would help. Then, you could contact the church. LDS files, Griffith's Valuation, possible Tithe Applotments of 1824, Tnenant records, possible school records. Civil records did not begin until 1864 and then only birth carried a penalty for not reporting. A few years later, death and marriage had to be reported. However, your ancestor was long gone. But, you might check Civil records for her father since he might have lived beyond 1864. Remember , she was born at the end of the Great Famine. ? is, since her mother survived to deliver her, did her father. Suggestion is to start in USA and work back since your information is limited. 1. [IRL-MAYO] Getting Photos copied
    2. While taking pictures of old photos and documents with a digital camera will work, the results are usually less than stellar. I suggest using a scanner, set at the highest resolution possible. Today there are a number of small scanners on the market which can be considered "portable." I use the Canon LiDE 100, which is a flatbed scanner capable of handling items as large as 8.5 X 12 inches at a 1200 DPI resolution. It cost less than $100. Best of all, it is no bigger than the average laptop and will transport easily. A digitized image, scanned at 1200 dpi, is better suited for graphic enhancement using programs such as Photoshop, etc. Explain to your reluctant relatives that all photographs will eventually fade over time; it is the nature of the emulsions and papers used. Only a digitized copy will hold its original (at time of scan) colors and hues. The bonus is that even if the original is not in good shape, the digital copy can be "restored" with a little practice or by a professional studio. Once you have scanned all the photos and documents from any contributor, be sure to copy them all to disk and present them to your benefactor. If they have a favorite, you might have the final version printed and/or framed as your gift to them. Good deeds spread by word of mouth and soon you will have others contacting you to do likewise for them. murf
