Author: john_eagleton Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/8697.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Beth, First of all there is no doubt that Kenwards did immigrate from Ireland to the US although, like you I don't see the connection with your family yet. Many of the transcribed records from the old ships records and other sources are frequently misspelled. For instance I seen Kennards and the like that could well be Kenward and Spencer spelled as Spincer and so on. The 20 year old Spencer Kenward in the 1901 Irish Census was in the British Army barracks in Dublin was Church of England whereas Irish Protestants would have been Church of Ireland or Presbyterian I doubt if he's your Spencer but can't rule it out. Incidentally, one source of information is newspaper archives in Ireland, England and America especially from small towns where every birth, marriage and death is a big event. I'll take another look at things tomorrow when my head is clear. - John Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: DianeCulhane46 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/8697.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In the censuses Milton's father and uncles all said their parents were born in New York. However, Spencer's wife was reportedly Irish Canadian, so perhaps that's how Irish culture crept into the family. Or perhaps some of their grandparents came from Ireland. Spencer was born about 1880 and Milton about 1885, their parents presumably in the 1850s. It's possible the grandparents emigrated from Ireland in the late 1840s, during the potato famine. I'd suggest you look for Kenwards in old NY censuses in the 1800s, try to find the boys with their parents, then go back further and look for the parents with their grandparents. Author: maryellenchambers Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/8697.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Beth~ Just what Irish records have you researched in Ireland/Mayo? This will save people duplicating what you have already done. The marriage of 1881 would have a Civil record which will have the parents of the bride & groom and their address at that time. Although you can get that record at the Records office in Castlebar on North Antrim, you would have to figure out the exchange etc. Go the the General Records Office (GPO) website located in County Roscommon. It has ALL records for the Republic and will take credit cards. Have used them many times; turnaround is about 6-8 weeks for USA. Also, this will give you the townland/village of your ancestors. You might then be able to find sacramental records for them. If the English soldier in Dublin mentioned may be linked to you, go to the KEW website for English military records. You can get copies. If they were in Mayo at the time of Griffith's Valuation, you might check that. Just some avenues to research since you did not mention what has been done already by you. Have you checked the online Irish Census Records for 1901 and 1911? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I found very few Kenwards on Irish sites, and the name is English. Spencer Kenward was a soldier in Dublin in 1901, but born in England and much too young to be Menzo's father. Moreover, in 1910 and 1920 Menzo said his parents were born in New York. Diane Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My grandmother (Delia Agnes Molloy) (Born 1899 lived in Corraun, Townland: Keeloges, County Mayo) and had a brother Thomas (Born 1902) so I'm not sure this is your Thomas.
