Author: DianeCulhane46 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/8720.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There are at least 2 routes you could take. One is to go to rootsireland.ie and look for the baptisms of Mary and Martin. Many church records from the 1850s survive. If that produces no results, go to the Griffith's index on failteromhat.com and look for civil parishes that had both Clearys and Flannerys. Griffith's was done about the time Mary and Martin were born, so their fathers (or grandfathers or uncles) were probably listed. Convert the civil parishes to Catholic and check the LDS films for the baptisms. Unfortunately, the index doesn't show any Hapnick, so you'll have to concentrate on Melican for that pair. It can be a variant for Molohan, but start with Melican, of which there aren't many. Again, get the films and look for Martin as a father and any Kate as mother. With luck, though, you'll find them on rootsireland.ie. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: PatBrooks1961 Surnames: Cleary, Melican, Hapnick, Flanery Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/8720/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My Great-Grandmother was Irish-Catholic, maiden name Mary Cleary (Clery, Clary). She told her children & grandchildren she was originally from Co. Mayo, and censuses list her date of arrival in the U.S. as 1870. She married Martin Melican (Millican, Milligan), also listing his date of arrival as 1870 and his country of origin on censuses as Ireland, but the family was told he was Scottish. From the death certificates of these two individuals, I learned that Mary's parents were Patrick Cleary and Bridget Flanery, and Martin's parents were Martin Melican and Kate Hapnick. Mary and Martin married in Chicago in 1874 and lived the rest of their lives there. i need help in tracing them to Ireland, as I have found several individuals with those names and cannot know which are my ancestors. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Long story short I mistakingly responded to a general post which I thought was from Michael Marren but in fact was from Ed O'Hara regarding Michael Marren of Ballyvary. Oh well. Anyway, thanks for filling in some information regarding the family ancestry. It was also great to find out where my grandmother Bridget Marren was from. Bridget and Patrick Feeney had 5 children (John, James, Peter, Martin and Mary). Both Bridget and Patrick had passed by the time I was born in 1949. I am the son of Martin and Betty and my siblings were Patsy, Betsy and Kathleen. My wife Annette and I were raised and resided in Northwest Indiana (Whiting, Hammond, Griffith) and a couple of years ago moved to Indianapolis. We have three daughters (Beth, Pam and Catherine). Didn't know about the murder. Did this occur a long time ago in Ireland? Great to finally communicate with a distant cousin from my grandmothers side. Had seen the name Jeffers on some old notes that one of! my uncles put together. Anyway, have a great trip to Ireland this August. I will hopefully get back soon and be able to visit Ballyvary. Have a great summer. Mark Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I know that Annie (known as Anna in the States) came to the States in 1913--I have her immigration record, i.e., the ship record and her arrival in Philadelphia. So while the household in Mayo County looks possible---Anna would not have still been in Ireland when she was 24 since was already here in the States. We're fairly certain that her mother Catherine died before her father. It is possible that the John Clarke in Wicklow was my great grandfather since I found a listing where there is an Annie Clarke and John Clarke there in 1913 or around there--right around the time my grandmother emigrated. I suppose it's possible that John (who was widowed) may have moved to Wicklow for some reason and Annie accompanied him? Not sure but still researching that. On her marriage record (married in Philadelphia) my grandmother named her parents as John Clarke and Catherine Gray but again, perhaps the name Gray was incorrect, and one of these marriage records c! ould be my great grandparents. I suppose that I could try ordering my grandmother's birth certificate from Ireland and that would name her parents. We know much more about my grandfather's side (from Leenane) than my grandmother's. Thank you kindly for all of this information. It is greatly appreciated.
