Start USA and work back. You might try for Naturalization papers. I found that MA had records which in our family (my husband) ancestors had more detail then other states (i.e. port of debarkation, arrival place & date, etc). The MA COD have parent's listed and, again, in our case, not just Ireland listed but the townland/county. Parents names also there. Granted that data is only as good as the knowledge base of the person providing it, but you could get lucky. Many times the church record (not the certificate) will also have a bit more info than the usual. We found this by making a trip to the church. The old rectory records may be of help. The cert. only gives the date, name of bride & groom, witnesses & priest. The record book usually has more in most cases. I determined one of my Irish grgrgrandmothers when I found the Illinois death record of one of her sons, and I found him through the New York death record of one of her grandsons, but it took years and luck. All the data has been shared by people from their personal research. Again, not sure what data you are seeking for MURPHY, O'HARA, etc. As Diane has suggested, Tithe Applotments, Griffith's Valuation, 1901 & 1911 census. Ancestry for fee, and Family Search (free) have records. Term Irish American is USA not in Ireland. If you think there may be descendants of your ancestors still residing there, check out the Irish Phone Book which is on line. Google it for the website. Write letters to people you think might have a connection. May luck out and get responses. Since you list only surnames, no timelines and the year 1888 (there will be a civil record of that birth), very little to assist you . What is the "anything" anyone know mean? You need to tell exactly where you have searched, who and a timeline. You may have to spend some money to get civil records but they are there. Wish I could help, but just too little info to enable me or others to do this. Mary Ellen Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Could you send the links to the Christine Hunt you mention? Does not ring a bell name wise - but not too many sites I have not scanned online if Irish American, Sligo -- but I am throwing the net much wider now. I would appreciate the link if you know it. I was aware Sligo/Mayo Border moved in the late 1800s. But the impact on "regular folk" I am not sure of (and one reason for wanting to discuss it with people) but surely most have passed, as my GGF was born 1888, but their children and GChildren probably still remain). Anything anyone knows do post. Cheers, Murph_ Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Visited numerous times over the years. My last visit 2 years ago. Not too far away is the Castlebar County Library which has a great deal of genealogy data. Only charge is for copies. The Records office does not do credit cards, cash/Euros only. People have always been quite helpful. I give them my list with names, dates and type of record I need. Take a seat, pull out a book and wait. Death & marriage are not complete for the first decade or so. Only birth had a penalty attached if not reported. Marriage if your ancestor was Protestant which started in 1845 most probably would be there. Mary Ellen Chambers Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You need to give the parishes as well as the townlands. The Irish Times site will allow you to convert civil parishes to Catholic and tell you the status of the Catholic records. As Mary Ellen indicates, Griffith's should be helpful (see askaboutireland.ie), as well as the Tithe Applotments (nationalarchives.ie). You should learn what is already on line before asking people to mail you their records so you can put them on line. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You may pick up some data or routes to pursue. There is one part which has the changes to townlands when the borders of Mayo, Sligo, Galway, etc. changed about 1898, I think was the timeline. Other info is there too. Also there is the Irish Genealogy Archives Website which Christine Hunt has. Have you tried that for County Sligo/Mayo? If not, I can get you the exact address of that website. Just what websites have you investigated thus far?? Griffiths Valuation, Census of 1901 & 1911, Landowners 1878, etc. Just what have you already done to save repetition in assisting you?? If John and Ann married in Mayo, those records might be easier to find than baptism/christening because later. Few Catholic records go back to the early 1800s but some Protestant do, and the children's names suggest the family was Protestant. He moved to Great Yarmouth by 1813, where he joined the army. He was a private who went to New South Wales with his wife Ann. They had William 1820 (3XGGF), and Elizabeth 1818. They returned to Great Yarmouth and had at least 1 more son George in 1827. John died in Yarmouth 1833.
