They resided on a farm heading toward the Quay just outside of Westport. The Higgins family was raised approximately 8 miles South of Westport along Route 59 and are primarily buried in the R. C. Church yard in Oughavel. Glad to run into a " strain " of Higgins, I shall advise my wife. Bill Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Apologies if I'm restating common knowledge, but did everyone know that the 1838 Ordnance Survey Map of Mayo (1. Edition, Six-Inch) is available for viewing online at the Mayo County Library web site? http://www.mayolibrary.ie/maps/data/MapsData/index.htm Is that the same or different from the Discovery maps mentioned in this recent thread? I have been reading these messages for about a year,, and I thank you very much for letting me look over your shoulders. I have learned a lot about Ireland and doing genealogical research. I got started trying to find out more about my g-mother Catherine Duffy. I am very curious about her, since she apparently paid a very high price for marrying my g-father Albert Robinson. Our families split because she was ex-communicated when she married , and apparently it scarred everyone, because I never remember meeting any Duffy relatives, even though they probably lived only 15 miles away. My mother would not talk about it. Her parents John(P), b1841/1843, and Ann(Duffy), b 1842 were probably from County Mayo. They show up in the 1870 US Census in Pilesgrove Township of New Jersey. I surmise old John sent his 17 year daughter to be a servant in someones house in Woodstown, NJ, and there she must have met Albert Robinson, apparently a charming young "sport" from a well-to-do old farming family in South Jersey. After reading on this mailing list about the Irish Famine and how the Irish Catholics were treated, I can better understand the split and the bitterness. I can't imagine anything that hurt old John more than his daughter running away with an English Protestant. I have to get back to NJ and do some digging before I can find out more.
Dear All, This is my first post to the Mayo list in 15 months. I've only recently discovered how to remove the HTML tagline which AOL added to my mail and caused Rootsweb to strip the content of my mail as a suspected virus or trojan. Regarding the maps on the www.bernieworld.net site: They are nothing special. Just reproduced segments of the ordinary Discovery maps 30 and 31 for this part of Mayo.....which I assume everyone already has [gr]. There are actually 10 Discovery maps needed to completely cover the county. These two maps are based on aerial photography flown in 1973 (by the French Air Force, as I recall) and have been updated periodically since then. I wonder how Bernie obtained permission to use the OSI maps.....they are usually very strict about the use of their maps. Perhaps, as it involves only a couple of the Mayo maps, it would be allowed under Fair Use considerations. Or, perhaps, he had to pay the "big bucks" for the rights..... But the feature locating the various placenames on the maps could be very useful to some - although his reference to latitude and longitude as the nature of the grid numbers is incorrect. These are truncated numbers using the Irish National Grid, and is a much better way to locate places in Ireland and N. Ireland on the newer OS maps than lat/long. coordinates. Hi Karla, If the civil death records don't have them, their church death records might. Here's a link to the US census records forms from 1790 to 1930, click on each form to see the level of detail it contains about the emigrants: http://www.ancestry.com/charts/census.aspx If you look at 1900 under personal description, the month and year of birth are included. It also includes number of years of present marriage which will help you pinpoint when they married. Lower on the same form on the left is year of immigration to the US as well as year of naturalisation. That should help confirm when each left Ireland and help search for ships passenger records for them in the US. That information will help find out if they married after they emigrated to the US or before. If after, then you can look for the marriage record there, both civil and church. Streamstown Townland and Belclare Townland are still there, Streamstown's name wasn't changed. Property is being sold in Streamstown. Hi Margaret, Yes it came to the list and I received a copy. If you look at the list archives on the Rootsweb site you'll see it there: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/IRL-MAYO/ Don Mullan from Concern Ireland (a worldwide charitable aid organisation) published a booklet in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Famine in Mayo and it had maps of the Famine sites in the county including locations of Famine graves. Every May there's a Famine Walk in Mayo (it was held this year on May 18) called the Doolough Famine walk. It's a ten mile walk to commemorate hundreds of people who died on the road in the Doolough Valley overnight on March 30-31, 1849. The people were told they had to be certified by British Government officials as paupers in order to get any food (3 pounds of the dreaded corn meal) but to be certified they had to appear at Delphi Lodge, ten miles away at 7 a.m. They walked overnight to Delphi Lodge in wintry conditions including snow. When they arrived at Delphi Lodge they were refused food and admission to the Workhouse there. They had to then walk the ten mile return journey. Exhausted and starving, hundreds of them died along the roads on the return journey. They had no proper burial. Hi Pete, I was likewise wondering how Bernie had permission from the Ordnance Survey Office here in Ireland to post those maps to his website since they don't allow anyone to claim rights to the maps and they're very clear about that. He also conveniently hasn't noted the source for the maps nor the years they're from on his website. He's offering paid genealogical services which makes the website a commercially related one too. The Mayo Discovery maps are really basic "tools" for anyone researching Mayo ancestors. Hi, Máiread ! Just to confirm that I did receive your long (and very interesting, but sad !) post ! You said that you sent it "yesterday" - it arrived in my 'Inbox' at 00.33 British Summer Time today - but of course that may be due to differences between British and U.S. time. It was very frightening to read (even though I have read several books on the subject, including Cecil Woodham-Smith's "The Great Hunger") - and also makes me think that my Roscommon grandmother's ancestors and my wife's Galway and Mayo ancestors must have been both very tough and very lucky to survive ! Thanks and Best Wishes ! Roger. ---------------------- On 10 Jun 2008, at 12:59, conaught2 wrote: > > Please excuse this post, I want to see if it appears in my inbox. > Yesterday I > wrote a long post about the above topic and it did not appear in my > inbox > and wonder if anyone received it on the list. > > Go raibh maith agat, > Margaret (Máiread) >

I contacted him. His reply is The detail maps of the Clew Bay area are from the Ordnance Survey. It says that the base maps are from 1975 and were updated in 1999. This surprised me, because at least from the 1960s, the family use Belclare as the townland name. Remember stopping at the post office for some reason years ago and got into a discussion re: old townland names and the new ones. I know the names show up on the various sites which is good for people researching. The names if they got them for townland, were from their ancestors who emigrated in the 19th and early 20th century. Yes, I would assume so. Didn't check it out because I'm on Ancestry.com so use that link. 1900 Federal Census was the first one for this area which actually put street names on the side of each sheet. Earlier census did not which makes some research difficult unless you know the wards. Which also changed over the years. Street names also changed in 1906 which even further complicates research. I'm not at home, so do not have those websites but if someone would like them for the Wards of Cuyahoga County, The street name changes, etc. I can put them online tomorrow morning. Baby sitting and decided to check my mail. There are still postal addys that include both townlands. So the date his maps are from make a difference as well as his source, where he got them. Map details depended on when the maps were done, the early Ordnance Survey maps from the early 1800s weren't complete or accurate. He's also got a link to the 1900 census maps that doesn't open. Are those supposed to be Cleveland census maps for 1900? For what it's worth; My understanding from a woman from Derry Park Mayo, is that Loftus is a name common to [I'm never going to get this spelling anywhere correct...sorry] Shaunaferaghaun. A loftus married a Joyce and came to Portland, Maine to be near relatives. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Oceanstrands" <oceanstrands@yahoo.com> To: <irl-mayo@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2008 9:22 AM Subject: Re: [IRL-MAYO] Bridget Loftus - Thomas Hannigan m. abt. 1889 > --- Ejljbl@aol.com wrote: > "He went back to Ireland and was probably living > close to Her in order to meet & Marry Her". > > Probably? He doesn't say but I assume that before the time when my family's townland Streamstown was still known as by that name. Now the family considers it Belclare. Belclare on this map Section 31 is the next townland over on the ocean. You know, I never asked when the change came about. It does list old townlands down the road now R 335 i.e. Knockfin and Clerhaun. This is where my ROONEY ancestors lived. I will send an "E" mail to the Cleveland Irish list and ask.
