    2. Did you check the LDS film of the original record? Often it has more information than on-line sites provide. Also, the civil registration (groireland.ie) would give the fathers' names and townlands. Diane

Author: llanigan7349 Surnames: COLLINS, MCCONNELL Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/7859/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Woohoo! I finally found some information on my most elusive third great grandparents - I finally found their names! They were Bernard Collins and Ellen McConnell. According to "Bishop Loughlin's Dispensations - Diocese of Brooklyn 1859-1866, Volume 1," Bridget Regan married Edward Collins November 2 1864 at St. Mary Star of the Sea, 467 Court Street, Brookyn 11201, Edward, of County Mayo, was the "son of Bernard (Collins) and Ellen McConnell" per this same source. As far as I can figure, Edward was born c1832 (he wasn't sure, according to his Civil War pension file). I do know he had at least one sister, Catherine, who married Bernard Devoy in Tompkins County, NY in 1855. They wound up living in Wisconsin (my, these Collins' moved around a bit!) Now....can anyone help me with any information concerning Bernard and Ellen McConnell Collins? I would be so grateful for any help you may be able to give me! Thank you in advance! I think you are also right about the brogue being an issue as there seems to be some dispute as to whether my gg grandmother's maiden name was Connors or Connolly. Most documents show Connors but one marriage entry shows Connolly which I think is a mistake. I have actually obtained copies of the register for my g grandmother and also for her sister and whilst every other entry has quite detailed addresses the two I am interested in both just say Ireland unfortunately. Thanks for the thought anyway and good luck with your research. Ljay Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: maryellenchambers Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/7855.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This is just a thought based on research we have done in the USA/Catholic records. If you know the church in RI where your ancestor was married, contact them and/or the Diocese Archives. Ask for the COMPLETE data in the church register for the marriage, not just the names of the bride & groom, the witnesses, the priest and date. That data is put on a marriage certificate but in many instances, (at least in the greater Cleveland, OH area) the parish register will have the names of the parents of the bride and groom, where these parents reside at the time of the wedding (not just Ireland or England). I found this out when I went to my Gran's church where she was married. They had NO listing for her but had my grandfather listed as marrying a Mary Ellen PATTON! I asked to see the record. Couldn't believe Grandpa had been married twice to two women with the same given name. The clerk pulled out the old record from 1899. It was Gran, my g grandparents names listed with the county and townland. My Grandpa was first generation but his parents names and residence in Cleveland were listed. My Gran's maiden name was FADDEN so we think that her brogue may have caused an issue with whomever recorded the the maiden name. Her unmarried sister Anne was a witness and she was listed as Anne PATTOn. We also have a letter which arrived two years late for my husband's grandparents to the priest giving the data for Baptism, parent's names, residence in County Wexford. We assume that other family vouched for this couple not having any previous marriages. They were married in 1878 in Cleveland, OH I would contact the parish and ask for the complete data for the marriage registation, not just what is on the marriage certificate. Author: oceanstrands Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/7855.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Ljay, Because there are no complete records surviving in Ireland and no records in Ireland about who left, where they went or what happened to them after emigration, records for the emigrants wherever they went would be the sources to search to identify where in Ireland they were born and their parents names. There are no surviving census records in Ireland before 1901. Not all the 1901 census records are even online yet. The 1911 census records aren't online either. Civil registration/vital records in Ireland which began in 1864 aren't complete because all births weren't registered. All deaths weren't registered either. The Irish Government hasn't put the Irish civil registration records online. County Heritage Centres have some of them but not all. All church records in Ireland don't survive either and there are thousands of parishes. Many parishes don't have complete surviving records and many of the records that survive have gaps in many years. Their civil and church records in the US as well as their obituaries, cemetery records, tombstones, wills, US Naturalisation records are sources to search to find their birthplaces in Ireland. There are 32 counties in Ireland with 64,000 towns and townlands. You can see the names of all the towns and townlands in all the counties of Ireland at the Ireland Townland Database http://www.seanruad.com There are complete census records in the US which you can search to find records locally where the emigrants lived. The 1900 US census for example contains month and year of birth of emigrants as well as when they were naturalized and when they emigrated to the US. There are complete census records in England as well as completre civil registration and church records which you can search for any family members who went there. Their children's civil and church birth/baptism, marriage records are more sources that may include their parents' birthplaces in Ireland. With 66 Hanley families in the 1901 County Roscommon census alone, there is little likelihood any descendants of any of those families who may or may not still be in County Roscommon and didn't emigrate would have any idea about whether or not they were even related to your Rhode Island Hanleys because there's no way here in Ireland to connect to anyone who may have emigrated through civil or church records. Hanley is also a very common surname in Ireland and it's found in all 32 counties. The same surname doesn't mean any family connections whatsoever. There wasn't just one Hanley family who were all related either in Roscommon or the rest of Ireland. Have you searched for Agnes information in England? Agnes was born before civil registration started in Ireland in 1864 so there won't be any civil birth record for her. The church records for wherever she was born in County Roscommon would be the possible source for a baptismal record for her if the parish records survive back to her birth year. Here's a link to the Roman Catholic parish maps in County Roscommon, click on each parish to see what years the parish records cover and where they can be searched, not all parish records are complete for all years: http://www.ireland.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/roscommonrc.htm Agnes civil and church marriage records in the US should include where she was born in County Roscommon. Then you can see if the Roman Catholic parish records for that location survive for her birth year. Her children's civil and church records in England may include where their mother was born in Ireland. Most cemetery records aren't transcribed anywhere and are not online. There are hundreds of cemeteries in Roscommon and thousands of cemeteries in Ireland. You'd have to know where the various family members were buried and visit the cemeteries in that burial location to see if there were tombstones for them. Not everyone had tombstones. Irish civil registration/vital records death records are microfilmed and available through your nearest LDS Family History Centre in the US. You'd need to know the dates of death of family members to search for any death records there might be. Many deaths weren't registered. The IFHF website includes the following records for County Roscommon, you'll see they don't have complete records for all locations and all years. Cloontuskert Catholic records for example don't start until 1865: http://roscommon.brsgenealogy.com/generic.php?filename=sources.tpl&selectedMenu=showdatabase The IFHF website includes a map of the counties of Ireland so you can see where they are. If you click on each county on the map and search the local Heritage Centre information you'll see what records they have online. They don't have all records online of the records that survive, and not all records survive. I have heard also there is a very high error rate on the IFHF database according to Irish Government audits.
