    2. Tim, == Does anyone know if the townland of Barna still exists in the civil parish of Ballinchalla (within three miles of Ballinrobe, I suspect). == Yup. It's still there. Four miles SW of Ballinrobe town, and shown on Discovery map 38. As of 1999, there appear to be about 9 buildings in the 193-acre townland. I have recently found out that the reape family that I was led to believe were my ancestors from ballymacredmond, Ballynahaglish parish are not mine after all, wrong info was passed on to me. Anyway I have since found that my Reape family were from Ballyderag, ballynahaglish parish. It´s possible they were related to the ballymacredmond family but I don´t know yet. My GG grandmother was Mary (nee reape) Robinson, she had 3 brothers that I know of William, Michael and Martin and a sister Bridget. William and Michael were still living in Ballyderag in 1901. You said your family used the Knockmore church, mine used the Rathduff church. 1. Re: [IRL-MAYO] STAUNTON
    2. In a message dated 01/07/2008 12:05:42 GMT Daylight Time, lindastaunton@btinternet.com writes: I'm hoping to find my father's ancestors in the Belcarra Ballydavock area of Mayo. My father was born (Templemore) in 1931 to Patrick Staunton and Catherine Ryan. Patrick was born about 1905 at Belcarra and father's name was John (my dad thinks?). Patrick had a brother Thomas, two sisters Annie and K?, maybe more. Patrick died in 1977 Newpark Kilkenny and served for a long time in the Garda Siochana joining the force in 1923. If you check the 1901 census for Ballydavock, you will find a Catherine Stanton (widow) there, living with her son John and his wife Norah. John was 28, born c1872, and the couple did not have any children at that date. If this is the correct family, I think you can presume a marriage for John/Norah in the previous year c1900. LDS film no.0101259 contains the marriage index for 1898-1901 Obviously, you only have the one full name to search for, and you are looking for a marriage registered in the Castlebar district. Hopefully there won't be too many. NB There are only 4 other possible John Staunton/Stanton in Drum parish in the 1901 census: 2 in Curraghmore, one in Corrabaun, 1 in Lugaphuill, should this not be the correct family. If Catherine is the mother's name, only 3 couples register a son John in Mayo c1870-72: 1) Tom Staunton/Cath Scahill 2) John Stanton/Cath Concannon 3) Austin Staunton/Cath Dunne (2) John + Cath registered their kids in Balla (John /film no.101218) so must be your first choice (3) Austin + Cath registered their kids in Castlebar 1 (John /film no.255822) so also worth a look (1) Registered Westport I suggest you also look at the 1911census for the parish of Drum. You need Ballydavock (LDS film no.2193162); Ballycarra / Belcarra (Film no.2193189) Other townlands in the parish are on film numbers 2193160/3. Once you have located the kids born 1901-11 on the census, you can apply to the Irish GRO for birth certificates. There was a John Staunton farming in Ballydavock c1855, alongside an Edmond Hughes. Thomas Staunton, and Catherine Staunton, were both in Ballycarra, and there were numerous other Stauntons in the parish (including an Austin). You need a few firm birth/marriage records first in order to decide which is the correct family. The LDS FHC in South Kensington has all the Irish BMD indexes in permanent stock, as well as all the Irish BMD (actual) records they have filmed. These are as follows: Birth 1864-80,1900-1913,1930-1955 Marriage (all denominations) 1864-70 (non- RC from 1845) Death 1864-70 You will be able to see/print your father's 1931 birth cert. if you don't already have it. They have most of the census and parish records also in permanent stock. The RC parish for this area is Balla, and the records date from 1837-1905. LDS film no.1279209 You might want to check their in-stock catalogue on _www.hydeparkfhc.org_ (http://www.hydeparkfhc.org) just to make sure before you visit. While you are looking at LDS films, there was a Pat Staunton who joined the RIC in 1922. It's a long shot, but he could just possibly be your relative. The RIC was disbanded in august 1922 and the men would have transferred to the Garda (or RUC) at that time. His service record would be on LDS film no.0852104, or listed under service number 83342 in the National Archives at KEW. If this is not your Pat Staunton, you would need to write directly to the Garda Museum at Dublin Castle for the Garda record. One last point -you mentioned a Rev. Padraig Staunton of Carraroe. If you google Ballydavock you will find a brief bio.about him, born 1946, a writer, playwright and priest who was based on Aran and Carraroe. He published his autobiography in 2004, so that might be a shortcut to some of your family history! Hope this helps. Cathy

    2. Ed, Thank you very much for your welcome. It is nice to be welcomed. I tried to write you off list because I am about to unsubscribe from it. But I just found out I can't get through to this address. My second cousin is coming to visit us next month from Ireland. Nine years ago I not only did not know they and many other relatives existed, but what county my grandparents even came from. I started much the same as I have done here. One small step that could possibly be parlayed into another. Since then I have veritable sources and documentation for each birth, death, marriage, passenger list entry. It's all in my book, Brennans of The Bog. I'm proud of that scholarly work and I don't need passive aggressive methods to debunk mine, unfortunately through you. I did use the IFHF database and got some interesting hints. Thank you again. Milli **************Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars. 3. Hello Martin, Many people are asking the same question. Email Catriona Crowe at the National Archives in Dublin and ask her what's happened to the project. She's in charge of it. ccrowe@nationalarchives.ie They've put up one county for one census year in one year. At that rate of productivity it could be many, many years before the 1911 census is all online for all 32 counties, let alone the 1901 census records for 32 counties. Other relevant email addys to ask in addition: National Archives: mail@nationalarchives.ie Martin Cullen TD, Minister for Arts, Culture and Tourism, responsible for the National Archives: ministersoffice@dast.gov.ie Oceanstrands --- On Sun, 7/6/08, Martin Wright <martin@enterprise.net> wrote: > From: Martin Wright <martin@enterprise.net> > Subject: [IRL-MAYO] The national Archives of Ireland, on-line census 1911 > To: irl-mayo@rootsweb.com > Date: Sunday, July 6, 2008, 7:42 PM > Hi > > Does anyone have any idea at all when the online census > will be extended beyond Dublin? > > Regards > > Martin > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > IRL-MAYO-request@rootsweb.com with the word > 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and > the body of the message
