It can even differ in the same parish depending on the time periods or the clergyman who entered the information in the parish records. Because church marriage records you have for your specific family's marriages from the 1840s onward don't include fathers name or address doesn't mean they don't exist. As I said it varied. The ones we have for various ancestor's sacramental marriage with dates from the 1840s onward, do not have father's name or address. However, the CIVIL marriage records, post 1864 for the Catholic and post 1845 for the Protestant, do have the father's names for both bride and groom, the occupations for the bride, groom and the fathers, and the addresses at the time of the marriage and the bride & grooms parish church. Therefore, if your ancestor was married post 1864 you could get the information you seek from the General Records Office in Rosscommon. The Jordans came from Knock and the surrounding townlands. My Walshes were from Carrabeg, Claremorris, County Mayo. The Concannons were also from the same townland. In other words the name is derived from a given name. That Irish surname was then adopted by a Norman family whose head was named Jordan d'Exeter. The Normans became more Irish than the native Irish themselves. They were called Hiberniores Hibernicis. The Burke surname arrived in Ireland during the Anglo Norman invasion too as did other surnames like Delaney, Butler, Fitzgerald. The Jordan surname is very common in Connaught Province which includes County Mayo. The Normans arrived in Ireland in the mid twelfth century during the Anglo Norman Invasion. See: http://www.triskelle.eu/history/anglonormaninvasion.php?index=060.046 The following link in addition to the history of the Anglo Norman invasion also explains that the Anglo Normans gave their children their fathers' first name as their surname. http://www.wesleyjohnston.com/users/ireland/past/history/norman_invasion.html Pat Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hi Recently someone asked when the other counties would be on the 1911 census. Kerry, Antrim and Down are expected in October, Mayo further down the track http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/about/futureplans.html Anne
People say that pay-fer groups want to put a fence around those records so they can lock them up and sell them. So hope they fail and the records remain free. -- don kelly -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: "Anne" <ahilton@tpg.com.au> > Hi > > > > Recently someone asked when the other counties would be on the 1911 census. > Kerry, Antrim and Down are expected in October, Mayo further down the track > > > > http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/about/futureplans.html > > > > Anne > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > IRL-MAYO-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in > the subject and the body of the message

Barna Townland is 192 acres and there's really no village there, primarily just houses in the townland. It's a very rural area. A roadmap won't include all the thousands of townlands. The Discovery maps are the ones you'd need to see the townlands. Those are published by the Ordnance Survey Office in Ireland, that's the mapping service. Hi Anne, Yes, the National Archives of Ireland have finally announced some specific dates when additional counties will be online. Hopefully the dates will be met. We'll see in October.
