    1. [IRL-MAYO] Anthony Gibbons & Honora Costello
    2. Katie Crow
    3. If you felt the earth move yesterday it was not just an aftershock of the California earthquake. I may be to blame as I finally discovered the names of my great great grandparents on my great grandmothers brother’s death certificate. I have been searching for at least ten years for a clue and, as with all things, it was there all along. Anthony died before Honora (Nora) and her oldest three (my great grandmother Catherine Gibbons was only 5 or 6 months old) immigrated to the United States (Warren County, Ohio) from Castlebar, County Mayo. Catherine was born in or about 1844 and her brothers James and Patrick about two and four years earlier. Any information on these families would be GREATLY appreciated! Since i posted the message ,i went to Ballhaunis in June last year ,there were no relatives of the amediate family left . What we did find were neibours of the family on their farms .but we had a fantastic time found out from the church when my g/grandfather died he was born about 1865 . Ialso found out from a irish web site that when the irish emmigrated they often changed their surnames it gave some examples Killeen surname was often changed to Churchill ,this really broke down my brick wall ,because this is what John Killeen did . He married my g/grandmother in 1891 in Rugley Staffordshire England ,their first son was born out of wedlock with the surname Killeen ,their second chid Sabina was given the surname Churchill .To cut along story short ,Sabina ended up in the US iam now intouch with one of her grandchildren in California iam still no wiser as to what became of my grandfather in the US but iam hoping other grandchildren of Sabina might know something ,he had a brother also in the US so hopefully they may know something of his family as well . We could be related i have,nt gone down John Killeen,s family ,What i do know is in the 1911 irish cencus the farm in Ballyhaunis was being run by Sabina Killeen (John Killeen,n mother ) and his brother Bernard . The Irish are very hard to follow because a fire in 1922 destroyed all the documents ,that is why they released the 1911 cencus early . I will check out that website now. I couldn't find them on any passenger lists from Canada, but Darby was naturalized in 1860, and on the form it said he entered the country through Burlington, Vt in 1849 and had been living in Clinton for five years... that surely fits what you've mentioned. The form says he is from the parish of 'Lienady' or 'Tienady' (since Darby signed with an "x" I'm assuming that the court clerk transcribed it as he'd heard it) which is why I thought Islandeady. Might there be any records in Burlington? Thanks again Meghan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You might want to look at the microfilms of those parish records. http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/mayorc.htm Most of the parish records don't go back far enough for baptismal information for those early emigrants to the US but you may find some marriage records for siblings who stayed. I thought they must have gone in through Canada but never found any ships passenger records in Canada that survived and included them. It was much cheaper to emigrate through Canada in the early years of emigration. Several of them ended up at least initially in upstate New York and Vermont in the border areas of each. Then later generations seemed to go on to mill and factory areas in New York State and over into Massachusetts. I went over to research their records over there in each of those places which is when I discovered the Hastings/Hostings/Hosty surnames. Lots of connections over there to Mayo people too! Here's the detail from the census: Townland Civil Parish Barony County Description Head of household Surname Head of household Given Head of household Occupation Other occupants Fallduff Kilgeever Murrisk Mayo Household Ryder John(53) blacksmith Bridget(45) wife-Patrick(20)-Margaret(16)-James(14)-Annie(12)-John(10)-Mary(8)-Kate(7)-Austin(6)-Thomas(5)-Bridget(2) The last census issued here is 1911 and that's not online but you could order it on microfilm through your nearest LDS Family History Centre in the US for Fallduff. At the outside possibility is that Thomas listed in the census died and the new baby was named Thomas. But if you look at the 1911 census microfilm you should be able to confirm if your Thomas is the one who was born ca 1896 or 1901 by the age shown for Thomas in the 1911 census. The 1911 census is the last one issued in Ireland. There aren't any records about who emigrated and where they went. Your ancestor may have applied and obtaine American citizenship at a time when the longer more detail form started, 1923 you stated. That would have the DOB he used. Also, depending upon who gave the information for his death certificate, it could have the correct birth date. He probably worked under Social Security, so a copy of that would have his birth date. If he married in the USA, check out Civil marriage license and wedding information at the church where he married in the USA. If he had children, that date might also be on a birth certificates for his children. Pension records, banks records, all would possibly have this data. If he went back to Ireland, a copy of his Passport application. Numerous ways to find the DOB he used in the USA. Draft registrations is another. I saw a copy of the article when I was researching at the Ballinrobe Library. I believe they had listed ships passenger records to the US which included birthplaces for the emigrants in Mayo. I don't remember if they went into the US through the port of Boston or New York. They may have emigrated later than your family did. The Local Studies Section of the Mayo County Library in Castlebar may have a copy of the Journal and might look up the article for you. Here's the link to the library, email addy is included: http://www.mayolibrary.ie/en/LocalStudies/ I have ancestral relations in Mayo whose surname was Hosty and many records anglicised their surname as Hasting or Hastings.
