Hi Oceanstrands, The first paragraph of my post dealt with the Primary Valuation of Ireland aka Griffith's Valuation which as you stated lists civil parishes. The second part of the post dealt with the Catholic parish for the Roach/Conroy reference from Dr. Ryan's "Irish Records". I omitted Ryan's information about what years records are available for Castlemore Parish because several times I have found older records are available in parishes which are not listed in Ryan's book . Ryan's book lists parish information by religion., i.e. Church of Ireland, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, Methodist and others. The information I stated regarding Castlemore Parish is listed under Ryan's Roman Catholic records. For Kilcolman he refers the reader to Castlemore Catholic Parish, County Roscommon. Since I have the Catholic Directory I added where Reed could contact the church since he stated he was interested Roman Catholic records. Beannachtai, Margaret (Máiread) Ireland consists of: Four Provinces: Connacht(Connaught), Leinster, Munster and Ulster (counties listed at end of post) The Irish researcher will mainly deal with the following civil administrative divisions: 1. Province 2. County 3. Barony 4. Civil Parish (usually referred by researchers simply as parish although it will in some cases vary with Catholic parishes. 5. Poor Law Union 7. Registrar District 8. Electoral Division 9. Town/Townlands FOUR PROVINCES OF IRELAND: Province of Leinster Carlow Dublin Kildare Kilkenny Laois Longford Louth Meath Offaly Westmeath Wexford Wicklow Province of Munster Clare Cork Kerry Limerick Tipperary Waterford Province of Connacht Galway Leitrim Mayo Roscommon Sligo Province of Ulster Antrim Armagh Cavan Derry Donegal Down Fermanagh Monaghan Tyrone
Hello Ed, Since the message was posted on the County Mayo list it would seem logical that Mary Ellen Conroy would have been born/baptised in County Mayo and not in any of the other 32 counties or 64,000 towns and townlands in Ireland. There's a list of the names of all the towns and townlnads in Ireland on the Ireland Townland Database http://www.seanruad.com and pick any county of interest. If you look at County Mayo you'll see there are 3505 towns and townlands in County Mayo where she could have been born. Because people have the same given and surnames doesn't mean any connection to Mary Conroy or her specific family. It's just basically a same name search. Of course people can "adopt" people who are no connection to them whatsoever. In addition to identifying that not all records are included in the "IFHF-BRS" database it should also be mentioned there's at least a 30 per cent error rate in the data entry in the database. You also don't mention if your search was just for Roman Catholic parishes or included Church of Ireland (Anglican) parishes also. Look at the IFHF maps of counties covered to see not all counties are there: http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/map.php?&set=yes Then look at the individual counties which are included for the records sources used. For example, you quote Roscommon and Westmeath: Here are the records included in Roscommon, note many of the Roman Catholic parish records don't go back far enough to include a baptism for 1836: http://roscommon.brsgenealogy.com/generic.php?filename=sources.tpl&selectedMenu=showdatabase Here's Westmeath: http://westmeath.brsgenealogy.com/generic.php?filename=sources.tpl&selectedMenu=showdatabase Not all of County Cork is even included in the database let alone the Roman Catholic parish records, just "North Cork" is there. Hi Margaret, Griffiths Property Valuation of 1856/7 lists civil parishes not the Roman Catholic parishes. The civil parishes were the Church of Ireland (Anglican) parishes. The Church of Ireland (Anglican) was the "official" or "state" church in Ireland until 1871. Here are the civil parish maps of County Mayo, click on each civil parish to see the names of the towns and townlands in each, you'll see there are two Kilcolman civil parishes in County Mayo, numbers 33 and 34. http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/civilparish/index.cfm?fuseaction=GetMap&CityCounty=Mayo You can then use the Roman Catholic parish maps in County Mayo to identify what civil parishes are included in which Roman Catholic parishes: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/mayorc.htm Here are the civil parish maps in County Roscommon, you'll see Kilcolman civil parish is number 23 on the maps: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/civilparish/index.cfm?fuseaction=GetMap&CityCounty=Roscommon Here are the Roman Catholic parish maps for County Roscommon, click on Kilcolman RC parish and you'll see the parish records don't begin until 1851, too late for a church baptismal record for 1836. http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/roscommonrc.htm Since there are no surviving census records before 1901 and church parish records don't cover all years of the nineteenth century there is no complete records source to identify how common surnames were and where they existed. Griffiths Valuation was done in 1856-7 after the Famine when Mayo alone had lost over 30% of the population: http://www.wesleyjohnston.com/users/ireland/maps/historical/pop_change_1841_1851.gif The population in Mayo decreased from 388,887 to 274,499 during the Famine alone. Many people in Mayo moved to different locations within the county for food or housing. See: http://www.mayo-ireland.ie/Mayo/History/Famine.htm Also many people in Griffiths occupied land just for farming and didn't live there. You need to check the actual detailed Griffiths on the Irish Origins website to identify if there was even a dwelling on the property. Many people too subleased land to others and they're not listed in Griffiths. Hi Katie, Here's a link to the Roman Catholic parish maps in County Mayo. Click on each parish on the maps to see the years covered in the records and where they can be accessed. You'll find many of the Roman Catholic parish records in County Mayo don't begin until well after 1840 sometimes the last half of the Nineteenth Century: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/mayorc.htm You're more than welcome to come here to Mayo to search at each parish in the county for any "hidden" records. If you find Catherine's baptismal record, it will have her parents' names, which will take you back another generation. Oceanstrands was saying you probably won't find her parents' baptisms, but you should be able to get their names if you can find her baptism (or that of any of her siblings). Diane

Diane, She already has the parents names from US records -- Anthony Gibbons and Honora Costello. She would need those from the US records to confirm the Catherine Gibbons baptismal record she finds is for "her" Catherine and not one of the other many Catherine Gibbons born in Mayo then. She has Catherine's birth location from US records also. I said there definitely won't be baptismal records in Castlebar Roman Catholic parish records for Anthony Gibbons and Honora Costello -- if they were born in Castlebar -- because the church parish baptismal records don't start until 1838. Anthony Gibbons and Honora Costello would have been baptised in at least 1822 if not earlier. Hi Katie, Civil registration of births didn't start until 1864 and there aren't any census records surviving before 1901. Church parish records for Castlebar would be the source for Catherine and her siblings baptismal entries if they were all born in Castlebar. I assume they were Roman Catholic? Hi Carole, Where was she married? If you don't know where she was married or died, your best bet might be to check the Griffith's index on failteromhat.com and see in which parishes both surnames occurred, then get film of the church records. Diane
Dear Reed, The Griffith's Valuation Index (County Mayo 1856/57) lists John Conroy in the townland of Ballintaffy, Kilcolman Parish and a Michael Roach in the townland of Drumneen South, Kilcolman Parish. This is the only parish where both surnames appear together. There aren't that many Roaches in County Mayo. I cannot say for certain if this is the parish where your family came from but it is a good starting point. I have found many families using this method. According to Dr. Ryan's Irish Records for Kilcolman County Mayo you look at Castlemore Parish, County Roscommon. (it must have been in the area where the borders were redrawn). According to the IIrish Catholic Directory of 1996: Ballaghaderreen (Castlemore and Kilcolman) Cathedral of The Annunciation and St. Nathy The Presbytery, Ballaghaderreen County Roscommon Phone - 0907-60011 ( if this # doesn't work check with the operator because a few years ago County Mayo and some other areas had their area codes or part of the phone number changed. Good luck in your search. Great point about boats running slaves up to Canada and immigrants down... it makes so much sense and yet I had never thought about it! That must have been a fascinating trip; I haven't been up there in a long time but I know it's beautiful country. Were you able to find many records? Here's the link and you can click on the map to make it bigger: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/historical/champlain_1844.jpg I think the mapquest map is probably better to really see the small towns all along Lake Champlain and down the Hudson River for Vermont and western New York State: http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Burlington&state=VT I took the ferry from Port Kent over to Burlington across Lake Champlain and down the Vermont side to all the small towns and villages. I had gone north along the New York side and stopped at the towns and villages along the route to research local records there. The topography of the area is very much like Mayo and many of the original emigrants were farmers all along the areas there. I can't imagine how they survived the weather though. The climate here is so temperate compared to the Vermont and upstate New York winters with frigid temperatures and immense amounts of snow that stays there often until spring according to the locals and late spring at that! Ships passenger records were handed in at the ports of arrival. Irish civil registration/vital records didn't begin until 1864. Protestant civil registration marriage records began in 1845. Church parish records for your ancestors birthplaces in Ireland or Mayo which survive would be the possible source for baptismal records for them. You've posted on the County Mayo, Ireland message board. Were John Glenn/Glynn or Mary Reilly and her sister born in County Mayo? Do you have their birth locations in Mayo and parents names? Religious denomination? There's a list of the names of all the towns and townlands in Mayo at http://www.seanruad.com and pick Mayo as your search county. There aren't any surviving census records in Ireland before 1901. Oceanstrands Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
