    1. [IRL-MAYO] Searching KENNEYs
    2. June Chatterton
    3. Hi Diane I don't have any more on the KENEY/KENNEYs other that John was born in Mayo around 1837/9 to Nicholas (mother not known). I cannot find him before the 1861 census where is age 22 occupation costermonger (later to he hawker). He married Sarah POWELL from Brecon, Wales in 1864 and they had three children that I know of John Nicholas b.1865, Sarah Ellen b.1869 and James b.1878. They all continued to live in Sheffield. John married Emeline WITHEROYS but James didn't seem to marry. Sarah Ellen married an Edward GILLESPIE and after his death a Thomas MOORE. I found a marriage of a Mary Ann KENNEY about the same time as Sarah and Johns but haven't looked into yet. I have contacted North Mayo Centre and they tell me the database automatically searches variants so no further forward. I saw your posting on the web. My guess is that the person you are looking for is Michael Garvan, as the surname Garvan was often changed to Garvey and still is. I have a reference to a Michael Garvan born to Michael Garvan and Bridget Conry of Glenamoy in 1894. I know that there were intermarriages between the Morans and the Garvans as they lived in the same area of Glenamoy. What other information is contained in the letter you mentioned? 3. Hello June, This request is open to any other Kenny Kenney or Sweeney researchers from North Mayo. Do you know if there are any Kenny or Kenney relations in your husbands line that married a Kathleen or Catherine Sweeney ca 1940s. The Sweeneys came from Crossmolina Parish in Mayo and went to the London area to live. I don't the London area well, but I believe a Sweeney brother lived in Harrow which I believe is near London? Sadly, that is all I know on the Kenny line, but I do have more info on the Sweeneys if you are interested. Known siblings of Kathleen would be John, Daniel and Maureen. 3. I have just come back from a two week holiday in Ireland. Whilst there I discovered on a more detail map we purchased that there was a North and South Mayo Family Heritage Centre so I asked my husband to take me. It is his relative I am trying to find in Ireland as well. I completed a form and paid 30 euros for a birth search of John KENNEY, father Nicholas according to marriage certificate, who was born between 1837 and 1839. They told me they couldn't find him and gave me a printout of their results. How I wish I had looked at it before we left. The results where all under KENNY. Now I know this name can be spelt either way and has done on various documents I have through various relatives but John's was always spelt with the 'e'. As they do not seem to have a working email address, I am going to ring them and see if they can do a search under KENNEY under the same fee. I feel a bit short changed by this. He is my wife's grandfather.Michael Joseph Garvey married Eleanor mary Huntsman in South Shields County Durham, England in 1921, he was born about 1897, his father's name was Michael Joseph Garvey, occupation farmer. There has never been any explanation for his disappearance. My wife's grandmother Eleanor Mary visited Michael Joseph Garvey's extended family near Ballina in 1936 and again in 1939 and there may have been other occasions. The only clue I have is that Eleanor Mary Garvey recieved a letter from a Mrs John Moran dated 7th January 1946, the address of the Moran family was Baralty, Glenamoy,Ballina,Co Mayo. If anybody has any information about the Moran family at the above address I would be grateful. Thankyou. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If he was born in Rathlacken, church parish records for his religious denomination would be the possible source for a baptismal record for him if he was born there although the parish registers would have to be searched for all years since there isn't a birth year for him and there aren't any parents names. Have you posted on the Newcastle Australia message board to see if you can get information about him there, i.e. ships passenger record to Australia, Australian census records, etc.? 3. Hi, On Friday, 8th August, 'Bill' wrote: 'No need for these types of tirades on the General Web. A discreet message .... saying Hi, and that there was a misinterpretation .... would suffice, don't you think so?' A common issue in the early days of E-mailing was the misunderstanding of the meaning behind the text. It's cause was the nature of E-mailing; it being conversational style in letter format. The problem often was, and still is, the difficulty in conveying tone in writing and the result is the spats we're seeing, of the 'Oh, no, I didn't say that', 'Oh, yes, you did' type. All I can suggest is a re-reading of mailings before they're posted, to make sure they say what is meant. But if you are offended by a message, think of what Bill said. He got it right. Since the messages are about local records in the US, any local town civil and church records information in the towns in the US you’re interested in being enlightened about and which you referenced me for possible information about in your following reference (even though your mention Ireland it's the US) can be sourced there on the message boards and mailing lists in whatever the locations are for the small towns you’re interested in. 3. This message was posted on the list on August 4 and is clearly related to Irish records and your view of getting them Bill. Yet Mary Ellen Chambers didn't post any "defense" to this message on the list or any comment about her experiences getting Irish records to your message. One wonders then why not? Why pick PatWicklow's message about US church records for the defense and not this one which is clearly related not only to records in Ireland from as Mary Ellen Chambers mentions a "tourist" but also directly related to Irish church records? Take it from one who blew almost $ 100.00 in two (2) mailings to " the pastor of the church". Decided to visit Ireland and went to the church twice, old pastor there the first visit (could see the steak and wine) - too busy to help all week; then visited the same church the next year, new pastor - reviewed records dating from around 1825 up and found the McShane family instantly.
