I would like to thank Margaret, Mary Ellen, Bill, June and Nancy for the tips they have given to me about visiting the Mayo Heritage Centres. Our trip to Swinford, next week, is primarily a holiday, to visit the place where my ancestors were born, but I may be lucky and find some clues along the way. Best Wishes, Anne

They are very helpful - something to be aware of is that the birth dates may vary from the official records. This is because families had 6 weeks to register the birth of their babies and a lot of the women folk were left to tend the farms and bring up the children on their own whilst the men travelled to England for work. If you have seen the mountain you would understand why so may children from Glan have 2 birthdays! I have just returned from Ireland - had I known before I had gone I would have gladly gone to Ballina to look up the records for you. I will see what I can do from this end... Speak soon Sharon. Anne said: Also, can you just walk into a Heritage Centre and look at records, or do you have to make an appointment? Hi Anne I was over in Ireland on holiday for two weeks, not intending to do any research particularly as I didnt know what was available really but noticed the Mayo Centres on the map we purchased. We visited the North Mayo Centre and they did a search for me there and then whilst I waited. The also contacted the South Mayo Centre. The cost of one search of database is 30 euros but I was able to walk round the museum free (normally 6 euros) but also had a drink in the café there. I think I waited about 45 minutes. Good luck Regards June Chatterton Sheffield, UK

I am trying to trace one of my family (Winifred O'Donnell from Glanduff). Winifred married Richard Hughs/Hughes, from Attymchugh in 1893 (Marriage record - Richard Hughes of Attymchugh to Winifred O'Donnell of Glanduff, 17/11/1893. Witnesses to the marriage were John Reynolds and Winifred O'Donnell. Winifred is later shown on the 1901 census living on Richard's farm in Attymchugh. She shows her age as 34. I have tried to trace her birth but can't find anything and would love to know who her parents were and whether she had brothers and sisters. My Dad's family (Diamond) were actually from Muckroe. Anyway, any help you may be able to give would be great. Terry Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hi Anne, I do not believe that you can have access to records yourself other than in a locale like Dublin. As June indicates their is normally a fee, in fact the 30 euros is just a tip in essence to inform one whether you are within the region of your ancestors. Will cost anywhere from $ 150 - 189 to secure the data in printed format. Enjoy your heritage while in Ireland by talking with people, eating good fare, and having a drink of ale. Anne, If I were you, I would visit "both" centers and write (email) both this week requesting information re: Duddy & Gorman. Also visit the graveyards where your hertiage may lie. Heritage centers, in Ireland are not prepared to allow you to look at anything the last time that we were there. You had to fill out a request, pay for the search and then wait at home for an answer. You may try visiting the church to look at their records, but it is best to arrange for an appointment to review records. Any view that you acquire will cost you, so be prepared. Ask on the internet for help in CO Mayo and you may acquire more information. Enjoy your visit and treat it as a vacation talking with folks as you travel and mentioning names, dates, locales, et al and you may find yourself speaking with a cousin or two along the way!
