Lakehill Pond, just outside Ballyhaunis and on the way into Knock. Cloonternane & Killoveeny are both mentioned when Lakehill is used and they are both near Ballyhaunis so I guess it is a bit like Ruane. Off to work now, will talk to my family tonight and see what else I can find. SS Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Thanks Sam. And thanks for the photo. Someday I'll make it over the pond from New Jersey and tromp around the lands where my KEARNS ancestors lived (with the current landowner's permission of course!). It certainly clears up a bit of the mystery of why Ruane appeared on the 1870-1880s birth certificates of at least 3 KEARNS relatives who were born and lived in the area. I wonder how the name usually seen as a surname came to be associated with the place? Maybe a RUANE was once a landowner there? Do you know of any KEARNS still in the area? My next geography question would be if you've heard of Lakehill (might not be the proper spelling), supposedly around the Knock area too. My CALLAGHANs who married into the KEARNS family were said to be from Lakehill. Thanks again! Joe Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Upon seeing the surname Ruane, I recalled an ancient Gaelic word spelled as Rune. Rune was the name given in some circles as writings on stone.......thusly called Runestones many of which populate Ireland and Scandinavia. So, for an Irish Gaelic name, Rune is a possibility. -- don kelly -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: "gc-gateway@rootsweb.com" <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: cmccarthy17 > Surnames: > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/7531.3/mb.as > hx > > Message Board Post: > > My great great grandmother was Maria Ruane. Yes I do recognise the road. Growing up we always refered to it as the Bog Road as it lead us to the bog. Ha ha. There is actually a spring/well a bit behind where your great uncle is stood, hiding in a hedge. Often while home as a child, the pump on our own spring would breakdown so we had to fill up lots of buckets there. If you put Knock Mayo ito Google maps and then tick terrain you can actually see the old names of the areas, except Ruane of course. Carrownamallaght is actually on the crossroad where your G. uncle was stood. While I was actually home last week I found my grandfathers medical card and it does state Ruane on the card as he was born and died there. We also call the hill, up the field behind our farm, Le Horn, not the right spelling I am sure but at least you will be able to pronounce it. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with as I still have lots of family in Knock. I have attached a photo of what I know as Ruane taken last week. I will spare you the one of the cows. Regards SS Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Westport RC parish is Oughaval (Aughaval) civil parish. Baptisms 1845-1905 and marriages 1823-1905 are on LDS films 1279910, items 17-22, and 1279911, items 1-4. Baptisms 1848-1873 and marriages 1825-1860 are also available on line (go to the Irish Ancestors site and click on Counties, Catholic records, Aughaval) but I don't know if they're complete for those years. FYI: There are only three Flanagans in Oughaval in the Griffith's index. One might be Mary Jane's father. Diane
Sacramental records are at St. Mary's Church on the Mall and at the Westport Heritage Center at the Quay (this will be fee). It is nice to send a donation if you make a request at the church. Your description pins it down as closely as I've ever heard - thanks! If you do have any more info about the place I'd love to know. My KEARNS family lived and were tenant farmers there for most of the second half of the 19th Century and many of the children's birth certificates call the place of birth "Ruane", followed by Carrownamallaght. I've attached a photo of when my great uncle Vinnie Mann, whose mom was a KEARNS, visited the alleged location of the old KEARNS farm near Knock. Maybe you recognize it? There is some sort of possible connection between my gg grandmother, Mary (Tarpy) Dooley, and the Walsh family. Very little is known about her but it is suspected that she was from Mayo. There was a Catherine Tarpy from Mayo who was a sister of a Walsh male, but I have not been able to link her to Mary. That was a small community so the likelihood of relationships may be greater.
