This request is for Oceanstrands who has taken the time to share valuable knowledge with continuing research. I have used the Mayo Family History Center online data bases to obtain a number of baptism and birth records. I have a problem with their Death Record database and my inquiries to the North Mayo Centre has not provided any sufficient help. Deaths are listed by districts such as Foxford, Kilmoremoy, Lowpark, Killala, Bangor, etc. I know that Ballina was the main registration district for recording records. Are these other names subsets of the Ballina district? Could you provide me with any information as to what places comprise the Ballina registration district? My ancestors were all from the Attymass area, namely Carrowdoogan, Cartron, and others. A further example of my quest is that I am looking for the Death Record of James Loftus who died about 1890. The North Mayo database lists five possible James Loftus deaths between 1882 and 1887. Three were from the Kilmoremoy district, one from Lowpark and one from Foxford. When his daughter Bridget Loftus married Martin Barrett in 1869 her birthplace was Kregella. Martin was from Cartron. Thank you for any help you can provide. Regards, Tom Sadler, Sister Bay, Wisconsin, USA

My paternal grandmother was Margaret Mary Coyle (Nov 1911 in Holyoke, Mass to May 1996 in Springfield MA), daughter of John Coyle and Biddie Mae (Lavelle) Coyle, and raised in Belmullet, ca 1912 to 1926 when she was returned to Holyoke to live with her maternal aunt, Rose (Lavelle) Kennedy. Thereafter, she completed high school, became an RN, married a French-Canadian from Maine, had two kids, was abandoned, spent the rest of the 30s as a psychiatric nurse in a state hospital, worked in a war industry on bomb sights (the Springfield Armory), and then started her own small nursing home in Springfield in 1944 which she operated until the 1990s while she raised four children, was married twice more and had an off and on relationship with her Belmullet family, which included two sisters and one brother. The brother, Sean, moved to Springfield in the 50s and died from a brain tumor in the late 60s. I was the 'illegitimate' son of Margaret's 15 year old first son who was raised! as her own son. As you can imagine, this family was not transparent. I was sent back to Belmullet for the summer of 1964 and stayed with Margaret's maternal uncle, Michael Lavelle. I saw Margaret's mother for a few minutes and was basically interviewed by Margaret's sister, Biddie, at her place of work for a half hour. Strange. I was told alot of what turned out to be misinformation and, years later, periodically try to sort out who was who and why they did what they did. There is, as far as I know, a few Coyle cousins left in Belmullet. Marlene Gannon is a retired teacher who lives on American Street. She responded to a few letters from me in the mid 1990s and then without any apparent reason stopped. Good luck trying to figure this branch of what may be your family out. By the way, I was told repeatedly by Margaret that the Coyles were from Castlebar and had been travelling salesmen. I was also told the Lavelles were descended from French who landed an expeditionary force in 1798. When I was in Belmullet in 1964, I stayed with Michael Lavelle who was a kind man, a carpenter who had commanded IRA forces during the Anglo-Irish War which produced the Irish Free State and a bitter civil war. Anything else I can tell you, just ask. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I didnt realize until today, in reviewing someone else's inquiry that you had asked me a question. My paternal grandmother was Margaret Mary Coyle, born November 1911 in Holyoke, daughter of John and Annie Mae (Lavelle) Coyle. Apparently these people went back and forth between Holyoke and Belmullet with alternating generations staying put and then relocating or sending their children to the other place. John and Annie Mae returned to Belmullet ca. 1912 and remained there until they died in the 1970s. John was a shoemaker, drummer and heavy drinker. They had three daughters and one son. The oldest daughter, Margaret, and the son, Sean, moved to western Mass in the late 1920s (her) and 1950s (him). He died from a brain tumor in the 1970s; she died in 1996 from complications of diabetes and dementia. She had told me that the Coyles were middlemen/retailers, sort of like travelling salespeople who were from Castlebar. John and his brother in law, Michael Lavelle, were IRA combatants in the Anglo-Irish War that followed WWI. There is a granddaughter, Marlene Gannon w! ho I think still lives on American Street in Belmullet, who would know much more than I was told. Margaret was estranged from her family and I am not sure how much of what I was told was accurate. I was in correspondence with Marlene in the mid 1990s then she stopped writing. Good luck. My paternal grandmother, Margaret Coyle, was raised in Belmullet ca. 1912-1926, a time which included both the Anglo-Irish War as well as the civil war that followed. Her father, John Coyle and his brother-in-law, Michael Lavelle, were in the IRA during the Anglo-Irish War but did not, as far as I know, participate in the civil war at all, even though your grandfather had something to do with the negotiation of the Treaty and was quite vocally against partition. Michael was in his 80s when I spent time with him and his wife (I think they had 7 or 8 kids, none of whom remain in Belmullet). Michael was a very smart, modest and kind man. I think he was the rock of that family. John Coyle was too partial to drinking and his wife, Annie Mae, not only suffered from migraines but was fairly strange. When I visited in '64, she would only talk to me through a partially opened door and then only for about ten minutes. I was told that the Coyles and Lavelles went back and forth ! across the Atlantic from the 1840s until the 1960s, sort of willy nilly. From talking with other descendents of immigrants to the US, that seems like a common pattern. John Coyle's only son moved to the US in the 1950s and died fifteen years later from a brain tumor. The cousins are scattered and as far as I can tell out of touch. If you are interested in a picture of your grandfather, I would be willing to look around, scan and email it. Of course, if there are any other questions you might have, just ask. I think that Marlene Gannon in Belmullet would be a better source of information. Mine in third hand. Your grandfather was a marvelous man. As you probably know, he had been an IRA Commander during the Anglo-Irish War and spent his working life as a carpenter/furniture maker. Aside from Coyle and Lavelle, I am familiar, sort of, with some Cawleys and Walkers. While I think most were from Mayo, I think there were connections to Sligo as well. John Coyle was also an IRA man, a shoemaker, a drummer and when I met him, quiet. Annie was troubled. They had four children, one son and three daughters. I think that one daughter's children may still live on American Street in Belmullet. If you send a letter to Marlene Gannon, you might get an answer. She was an educator and retired years ago. Hello Peter, The online 1901 County Mayo census has entries for 49 Rush families in County Mayo in various locations in the county. You can find those by searching the census for Rush surname head of household and select Mayo as your search county: http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/census.shtml There are no surviving census records before 1901. Have you searched the England census records for other years before and after 1881 to see if any of the census entries for family members gives their specific birthplaces in County Mayo? They were born before civil registration of births started in Ireland in 1864, church parish records for their birth locations in Mayo would be the possible source for their baptismal records if the parish records survive for their birth locations. The names of all the towns and townlands in Co. Mayo are in the Ireland Townland Database http://www.seanruad.com and select Mayo as your search county from the drop down menu.
