In short it means in court. The Chancery was an early court, disputes over property and money held pending settlement of court actions appears to be the answer. You can look it up with a simple 'google' search and get a more definitive meaning. Since you know that these bmd's were Church of England, their records were not destroyed in the Four Courts Fire, government documents with recorded bmd's were destroyed there.Church of Ireland records with original registers before 1899 are in their Representative Library in Dublin. In person research either by yourself or a genealogist hired to search. However, the records for the years in question depend on the churches history of war, fires, storage as to what survived. I have been to the Library and have found records for Co.Wicklow bmd's back to the 1600's for the Aghold Parish , however, the particular records I was looking for the Carnew Parish records only survive from 1808. Each parish is different. With you knowing where some of the family are buried gives you a starting point in the parish records, also Griffiths give a Parish for the Short property. Many of the County Heritage Societies have copies of the parish records in their databases which are starting to b! e put on-line. There is a charge for the information of 5E per record, which is less expensive than hiring a genealogist or visiting Ireland but from others who have used this method you may get the wrong ones if you don't have the time frame and so many extended family members used the same names. If you contact me at codeannette@yahoo.ca I can give you the website as rootsweb's policies don't allow me to post commission/fee websites.Annette codeannette@yahoo.ca Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/7862.3.4.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Further to the various posts,I have a few questions. Could you tell me Anthony's mother's maiden name? When did Arthur (Anthony's father)Nash die? Did Anthony have Willie from his first marriage? What did Anthony die of in 1843? It's interesting to read similar names for both Anthony's and Isabella's sons. Isabella has only 1 daughter and 7 sons; 5 survived; the penultimate son: Nash being my 2x great grandfather. In January 1844, Isabella's second son Edward, dies aged 14 years. (Her first born son Arthur Tasden Short died aged 10 months in March 1828). There are no surviving records for births/marriages/deaths for the Church of Ireland from that area, at that time at all, those being destroyed in the Four Courts Fire in Dublin. The graves of the 2 sons and Henry (their father who died of typhus)are in the C.of I. churchyard in Ballina. I'm not sure that there would be a death record in the GRO in Dublin for Henry; (Isabella's husband) as civil registration did not begin until 1845 for non-Catholics and 1864 for Catholics. Isabella's death record in the GRO (general records office) states that she was living in Ballina at the time and Arthur, her youngest son was present at death. Apparently he died in the 1920's a Catholic, I've yet to research that, there are so many things I've to research, including the wills when I next go to Dublin! Do you know if there was there any correspondence at all between Anthony and Isabella or between their children? Do you know where the Nash's came from in England? I'm trying to research that and the name of the minister; Rev John Tollett, who came over with them. Regarding the land valuation in Griffith's I'm not sure what staus is meant by "In Chancery".When Isabella died, her eldest surviving son, Charles Frederick inherited the land etc.. but he was recorded in the 1870's as having 300 acres, which is not much compared to the amount Isabella had stated in her marriage settlement deed of nearly 1200 acres in 1825. Please let me know if you can answer any of the above, I look forward to hearing from you soon. Regards, 6dug3. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I spend much of my time trying to verify a written document my gg-grandfather Patrick wrote about his family and heritage. There are likely inconsistencies or inaccuracies in his story, so I appreciate all leads! For example, in Patrick's story, Arthur's daughter Elizabeth married Thomas McCormack, landed gentry. However, I find records for an Elizabeth Elinor Nash marrying Denis Arthur Bingham. Was this a 2nd marriage for Elizabeth? Or did Patrick change his story because he hated Denis Bingham? Patrick later notes in the same document that his dad, Anthony (Elizabeth's brother) was brother-in-law to the Binghams. My search has shown that the Nashes came to County Mayo as part of Arthur Shaen's attempt to set up a Protestant colony in Ireland in the 18th Century. They first settled on a farm near a ruined castle in Bangor, Erris, then moved to the Mullet in the 19th century, settling near Loch LEAM, south of Binghamstown. My particular branch converted to Catholicism when Anthony married "a peasant" (his first marriage). My gg-grandfather Patrick was born in 1843, the same year that Anthony died. He was the youngest of 6 boys. Willie was the eldest, born in 1830. The rest (in no particular order) are Arthur, Henry, George, Edward. Their mother's name was Ann (Anthony's 2nd wife), a daughter of a respectable mechanic who also had a small farm. After Anthony's death, Bell (Isabella) Short & her husband took possession of the house & land (per Arthur's will), & forced out Patrick's family. Mrs. Robert Bingham owned Bingham Castle at that time and was a cousin to Patrick's mother Ann, so she placed the family on a small farm 1 mile from the Castle, rent-free. The Castle went to Denis in later years. The eldest son, Willie, emigrated to Rochester, NY somewhere in the 1850s. In 1861, Arthur, Henry, George, and Patrick followed. Arthur and Patrick ended up in Pennsylvania. I do not know where the others ended up. Edward remained in Ireland with their mother Anne; she eventually came to the USA -- found her on the 1870 census living with Patrick in Pennsylvania. Also, Patrick spent some time in St. Catherines in Canada, where an Aunt of his lived. No name given. If you wish to contact me directly, my email address is: californiastars@aol.com.
