    2. The mysterious Oceanstrands writes: === Cloonrow is on the R416 (rural road) 1 1/2 miles from the village of Urlaur on the way to the village of Gorthnganny. === This would corroborate the location that had been mentioned before, and thanks for that. But I'm certainly dubious about the R 416 road designation. All of the R (regional) roads in Mayo are in the 300's - except for some of those which cross county borders. The R 416 goes through Newbridge in Co. Kildare. I had thought that this local road you mentioned might have been originally one of the "L" roads, but that doesn't seem to be the case (based on the old 1/2" maps). I'm curious where you got the R416 designation........especially as the more roads that can be identified by number, the better the driving situation will be in Ireland [gr]. Is there a new series of local road numberings now being introduced? Inquisitive minds want to know.......... 1. Re: [IRL-MAYO] Questions: Cloonrow, Kilkelly, GRENNAN, Marriage
    2. Rachel Goulet
    3. I want to thank everyone for their help with getting me pointed in the right direction with my GRENNANs. I had not heard of the websites mentioned ( http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_start.php), ( http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/), and ( http://www.mayolibrary.ie/maps/data/MapsData/index.htm), and although I've only been able to spend a few hours figuring things out so far, they have been a huge help. As Pete suggested, it looks like Cloonrow is a local name for an area within a townland - but upon reviewing the resources he suggested and my records, it looks like Kilkelly refers to just the registration district that Cloonrow is in, rather than the village which I originally thought - it seems Cloonrow may be in the Urlaur townland and this is supported by the "Residence of Informant" on James GRENNAN's death certificate for his brother Patrick of Urlaur - and the "Cloonroe Br." notation on the area map, plus Griffith's Valuation records showing James GRENNAN(s?) living right near there (possibly my James' father and/or himself?). And the (http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com/) site does have a marriage record in 1846 that might be James' as Ed and Pat pointed out, so I'll be purchasing that next to see where that leads me! I might have some more questions once I get a chance to process all this, but thanks again for all your help in getting me started off right! Rachel

    3. Hi Rachel, I've just spoken to my father who is from kilkelly, and he has never heard of a cloonrow in the area. The nearest sounding he said would be culmore, or cloonturk ( where he lived) these are what is known in Ireland as townlands. Do a google search for Roscommon 1901 and there will be links to the irish census for that time. Kilkelly is in the barony of Costello, you can search for grennans here. Any more info you need just ask. Regards Mike doyle

    1. Re: [IRL-MAYO] Questions: Cloonrow, Kilkelly, GRENNAN, Marriage records
    2. Rachel asks: === Could anyone tell me whether Cloonrow in this case would have been a village, a street name, estate name or what? I've found Kilkelly on the map with google maps - it looks like a very small village. Does anyone know how I could learn more about it? === This is the sort of project that I love. Especially, as I don't do any genealogy - so this is about the only way I can contribute to the lists. Let's start with the easy part......Kilkelly. As you probably know, Kilkelly village is about 6 miles northnortheast-ish of Knock town. In 2002, it was a sleepy village of 230 people, but by 2006, it had grown to a booming metropolis of 389 souls. A rapid increase in population, I'd say......but I don't know why. Perhaps the proximity of Knock Airport, 3 or 4 miles to the north, might have something to do with it. I don't have much more to say about Kilkelly. I've driven through it several times but, other than the ruins of a church (mentioned by John O'Donovan, in the 1838 Ordnance Survey letters), there wasn't much of interest there for me. Cloonrow does not seem to be a townland, at least, since the Ordnance Survey's completion in the 1830/40 period - when the townland names and boundaries were more-or-less stabilized. However, it is possible that Cloonrow (probably, a "red meadow") was a local name for an area within a townland. If so, this would possibly appear on the Co. Mayo six-inch maps of this period. You're able to access the Google maps, so you probably have broadband. If so, you might want to go to the Mayo Library maps and browse the area around Kilkelly village. I can do it, but I'm on dial-up and I have to rely on a "helper" CD which I received from the Mayo library a year or two ago, to assist me in a semi-offline use of the maps. You could probably zip right through this area directly from the library. The URL for the six-inch maps from the Mayo library is: == http://www.mayolibrary.ie/maps/data/MapsData/index.htm == I'm off-line now - and my procedure involving the CD may be different from the on-line direct access to the library - but I think you'd just enter the civil parish of Kilmovee, and then click-on the townland (or town) of Kilkelly. Then, you can move around the area and zoom, etc., as required......in a search for an area identified as Cloonrow. If you have any questions, drop me a line. I suspect that the Cloonrow is a bad transcription, or a poor reading of the placename. Do you have the placename in script form? Or has it already been transcribed into print? If you have the script version, perhaps you could scan it and send it to me? As an attachment, though - as my plain-text e-mail program won't convert embedded images into anything. If you have trouble using the six-inch maps, let me know and I'll see what I can do. It may take me several days to get to it, however, as I seem to have acquired more family obligations that usual at this time of the year [gr]. And dial-up requires my waiting until I can get a good connection speed.
