I think your Mary Gaughan is a sibling of several other Gaughans who lived in North Vernon, namely a Thomas b.ca.1835, Anthony born ca.1830, possibly others. I can't prove they'e sons of James Gaughan (ca.1809-1894) of North Vernon but they might be. All of them are linked directly or indirectly to Doohoma, County mayo where my own Conway family came from to North Vernon in 1860. I'd like to exchange information if you are intersted. James and John came to the US ca. 1830, and by 1833 bought land in Ohio. John was born ca. 1795-1798. James was born ca. 1800. James, although the younger brother bought the land, then sold it to John. John had a wife named Almira. In 1843, both men died. By 1846, Lawrence appears in Ohio and marries James' widow, Ann Marie Moran. I believe these 3 to be brothers. Lawrence lives to be 98-102 years old depending on his birth year, which ranges from 1803-1812. The 1900 US Census says he came here in 1830. I can't find the men arriving together, and they may have travelled between 1827-1830. Ann Marie was born in New York or Massachusets ca. 1815, and she dies in 1860. My great-gm, Mary Egan marries Lawrence, 1862. Mary Egan came to the US in 1851. She settled in Illinois, but then moved to Ohio after marrying my Lawrence. Her father's name was Pat, and she had a brother, John. In 1860, a Michael Daly arrives in Boston, marries a Catherine O'Rourke who arrived in 1861, and then they migrate to Ohio by 1862. They live on Lawrence's land for about 10 years, then move to another area of the town...seems that he did not like farming. They eventually moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Michael may be a half brother to Lawrence, as they probably shared a father. Michael was born in 1835 and died in 1900. Lawrence used the name Michael for a middle name on my grandfather's wedding certificate, and I've been told that in this period of time, there weren't "middle names". All this leads me to believe that these 4 boys had a father named Michael Daly. He might have also been named James or John. Other names that were used in our family was Francis and Frances, Patrick and Patricia. There was a Patrick Daly, Jr. mentioned in James' will in 1842, but I haven't been able to track him on any Census. If any of this sounds familiar, please let me know. Hello I'm looking for the person who posted a message on the MAYO message board on 30th October 2008 (LOOKUPS in Mayo Co) which was in response to a message I had posted regarding COMER's in Co Mayo in September 2007. My grandfather John Gaughan was the younger brother of Mary Gaughan. He lived in West Calder in Scotland near New Briech where your grandfather was born. My mother visited the Barretts in their pub after they returned to Ballina and used to write to her cousin Willie Barrett - your uncle. I have done a fair bit of research on the Gaughans and have photographs of the farm in Ballinsleva etc. While in Ballina earlier this year I had the please to meet Carol Williams the daughter of William Barrett and her cousin Michael Barrett. I just wanted to make sure you know that it may be cheaper for you to send away for the civil birth certificate from the Irish GRO. For ?6.00 you can get a photocopy of the birth registration record and they will search a two year period for the person you are looking for (ie, by her name, and both her mother and father's names, etc.). For me, I had the year of my ancestor's birth wrong so I ended up charged ?6.00 to be informed there was no record of the person I was looking for in the period 1868-1869 but when I sent another form in looking for the period 1866-1867, they were able to find my Sabina so it cost just ?12.00 total to get what is absolutely the right record with no false starts.
