Sorry, just re-read you original email, and see that you have already tried film #857693 In which case, my apologies, I don't have a clue. Some of the adjacent townlands you named are in Burren ED, which simply confuses the issue further. I may get the chance to go to HydePark FHC in the next few weeks, and they seem to have most of these films in stock, so if you are not in a hurry......... But if you only want a limited number of specific names and dates, I do recommend getting colour photocopies from the Valoff. cathy

Lappallagh townland (Islandeady parish, Westport union) around 1870. I see the problem. I can give you my best guess. I spend a lot of time with the revision books, though not for this particular area. It's the electoral division which is critical. You can obtain this by using the valoff.ie website, though of course, there may have been changes in voting districts since the 1930s. Let me know if you are not familiar with this site and I can tell you how to navigate it. Cornanool is in Castlebar electoral district, and is at the END of the first book. The revisions were simple at the start, taking up less paper, so the whole district would be on that one film. Later Revisions, cancellations and re-numbering took up more paper, so part of the district would be on the 2nd film, and therefore I suggest that the remainder of the district, including the townlands right at the end, will be on the 3rd film # 857693. Townlands in Islandeady parish fall into either Clogher or Islandeady electoral divisions. Lapallagh is in Islandeady ED, but it is not listed as such in the LDS catalogue. I think this may simply be a cataloguing error, so I would order # 857733. But you could email the Valoff to check the correct ED in 1870. It might be helful if you could ask them to name the townlands on either side of Lapallagh in the Revision book. That should certainly narrow it down. Or you could ask them to photocopy the relevant pages for you. There is a charge, but it's so much easier to make sense of it in COLOUR! Regards cathy

You can get the Griffith's index by going to failteromhat.com and search by name, parish, or both. MacLysaght's Surnames of Ireland is available in paperback and well worth it. Another good publication is Mitchell's New Genealogical Atlas of Ireland, as it shows all the civil and religious parishes, as well as the registration districts. Grenham's Tracing Your Irish Ancestors is great. Finally, the Irish Family History Foundation site is very helpful (irish-roots.ie). The information you have provided is good to know. I know alot of the time, back in the day, people would spell things the way they were heard or how the person said it and would sound it out to spell it. So, this is nothing new as far as the search goes :) I do appreciate everything. Oh, one more question, the Griffith's and MacLysaght's, is this something I can access? Do you have a web address for either of them? I am new to moving forward in my search of my Irish ancestors. I have made it as far back as the ones who came from Ireland and I think this is why I am stuck. Lack of resources. Any sites you may have may help me in my search. Is this a spelling variation? I do recall my grandmother stating that she thought the Knoxes were from County Cork, but she may have been wrong, because his naturalization paper states County Court, New York, so this may have confused her. It seems much more possible that they were from Mayo since that is the same county that Achill Island is in. Could you please acknowledge any spelling variations for Reddy. You could try writing the parish priest, but it would be a long shot. The Griffith's index shows plenty of Ruddys on Achill Island, Knoxes in Mayo but not on the island. Perhaps they met and married elsewhere in Mayo. Diane Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
