ID: I3054 Name: James DOHERTY Sex: M Birth: BEF. 1828 Marriage 1 Sally RITCHIE b: 1832 Married: 23 FEB 1852 in Rawdon, Quebec It is possible that Dougher was changed back to Dougherty when they came from Ireland. When you look at census records, even people within the same family had their surnames spelled differently. My GGG Grandmother, Catherine McDonald, had her name spelled the way that it would be pronounced in French - McDonnell. The Irish entering Canada from Ireland came through Quebec City, where they were quarantined for up to 40 days. Many died at Grosse Ile. There is now a monument to commemorate the Irish lives lost there. I have been told that when ships neared Montreal, many of the Irish passengers jumped ship thinking that they would have to endure another quarantine. They were taken in by the French at St. Jacques-de-l'Achigan, and from there migrated to nearby Rawdon and St-Alphonse-Rodriguez and later to Montreal. Two hundred years ago, Detroit was still part of Canada, so many people from Quebec travelled back and forth. The Irish went where there was work to be had, especially in woollen mills like in Rhode Island. John Corcoran, brother of my GGGG Grandfather James, came to Canada on the Eddystone from Gravesend. Patrick came on the Edward & Ann in 1811, but it doesn't say from where. Thomas also came on the Eddystone from Gravesend in 1818. I had forgotten that I had that information. As I mentioned, they had been engaged to work for the Hudson Bay Company and later arranged for their siblings to be brought over. If I find anything else of interest, I will be sure to let you know! I would check out the Grosse Ile website. Nicole Gareau Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have not really explored the entry ports of Canada but like I mentioned, I had heard there were many Irish who entered that way. I was not sure if it was true for the people of Killala/Crossmolina/Ballina. My family seems to have arrived in the States early (1844) compared to other Irish settlers in the Carbondale/Archbald/Scranton PA area. No one seems to know the history - it's too old. The interesting thing about the DOUGHER name is that it only appears in Co. Mayo and in Donnegal in the 1850s. Although it may come from some derivation of Dougherty, the spelling can be found in the 1850 Irish census as either DOUGHER or DOOHER (the phonetic spelling). The only spelling that exists in Ireland now is DOOHER - and there are only a few families left. In comparison, the name DOOHER doesn't exist in the Scranton area but DOUGHER is a fairly common name. Generally anyone one who spells it that way, I'd bet has some connection back to the Carbondale/Archbald/Scranton PA area. Anyway, if you find any other information regarding how or where your family entered and or left Crossmolina, I'd be curious to hear. I'd bet there were others taking the same path. thanks again! I have only gotten as far back as Dominick & Margaret Granahan Corcoran. Perhaps that is where the link will be. Dominick was born in Ireland abt. 1821. I think he raised his family in the Rakestreet area of Crossmolina. He died in 1906 and is buried there. Dominick had a younger brother, Patrick, who had five childen: Dominick, Patrick, Mary, Michael & Kitty. There was the younger sister Honora, she married James Ferguson and came to the Buffalo NY area. I don't know of any other directly related Corcorans in the Buffalo NY area. My ggrandmother, Mary Corcoran, came to the US in 1887 with her younger sister, Margaret. Her parents were Dominick and Margaret Granahan Corcoran. Mary & Margaret went to stay in Alden NY with the Martin & Katie Ferguson, their sponsors. Martin Ferguson was the son of Bridget Honora Corcoran. She was the younger sister of Dominic Corcoran. Honora married James Ferguson. Martin was in Alden NY around 1886. His parents came to Alden as well. So my ggrandmother, Mary, was Martin's cousin. Also in the Buffalo area were Mary Corcoran's siblings, Michael Corcoran, James Corcoran, Anna Corcoran & Patrick Corcoran. Each remained in Buffalo and are buried here with there families. Other siblings: Nora went to PA and then CA. John & William went to DC (although John was buried in Buffalo). Martin & Bridget Corcoran remained in Ireland. Author: cully194 Surnames: CORCORAN Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/912.1128.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Many Irish immigrated through Canada to the US because Canada was part of the British Commonwealth. They also tended to immigrate to areas where Irish were already established. The first of my extended Corcoran family to immigrate to Canada were three brothers who worked for the Hudson Bay Company beginning around 1817. They later brought over 6 other siblings who settled in Rawdon, Quebec (Canada East) and surrounding areas. Some migrated to Montreal. I have almost 100 Corcorans in my tree so far, and that comprises mostly just the first three generations. >From Quebec I have been able to trace my Corcoran migrations to Decatur (Alabama), Leadville/Canon City (Colorado), Madison Lake Village (Minnesota), Chicago (Illinois), Woonsocket (Rhode Island), Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania), Phoenix (Arizona), Gloucester/Pittsfield (Massachusetts) and Buffalo (New York). I haven't been researching long enough to get details of where they entered the US. What I have found has been mostly through connecting with distant cousins in Canada and the US, census information and birth, marriage and death records. It is very easy to trace one's ancestors in Quebec because the Catholic priests kept excellent records. There are 7 Doughers on the 1852 automated Canada census (it is not complete yet). One of them was born in the US and some were born in Ontario (Canada West). Here is the link: http://automatedgenealogy.com/census52/View.jsp?id=7296&highlight=28&desc=1852 Census of Canada page containing Elizabeth Dougher There are 21 Doughers on the 1901 automated Canada census. Here is the link: http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/SurnameList.jsp?surname=DOUGHER &initial= &desc=Search all 1901 Census of Canada records for surname&Go=Go The name Dougher is possibly a short version of Dougherty - Irish names were often misspelled or changed due to the difference in language. I have also found that some Irish Catholics may have changed religions due to the fact that there was no Catholic church in their area. I hope this helps, Jamie, and thanks for giving me areas in which to search. My biggest problem is that my Corcorans immigrated to Canada before official records were kept in Ireland. I would be pleased to answer to the best of my ability any questions that you may have about researching in Canada.
