My ancestors the Hegartys were located there from the 1850s and most likely considerably earlier. Its a remote area of bog and forest. Alongside a the river Altderg is he remains of a number of buildings which at one time contained 3 Hegarty families. It is quite likely Julia Hegarty lived there. Some 400 metres from the ruins of the Hegarty houses is a later house, now unoccupied, but still roofed where a local man told me the Ruddys lived. He said the a Ruddy married into the Hegartys. Author: JackJMcBride Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/7748.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello Janet, Glad to hear you were aware it's a valation of tenements i.e. property and not tenants, i.e. people. However, your post called it the Griffiths Valuation of Tenants and not the Primary Valuation of Tenements which could be very confusing to others who don't have your knowledge of it. Hence the clarification of what it actually is. If you look at the detail in the Primary Valuation (by the way it was published for Mayo in 1856-7) and not the Index Extracts, the focus and detail is about property -- area, description, and assessed valuation. Unfortunately it only lists occupiers of that property and no further detail about them. Jack Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Mary McHale was a sponsor at christenings in 1860 & 1868 and Ellen McHale was a sponsor in 1871. The christenings were in Islandeady parish. Although there's no way of knowing if the these are the same Mary & Ellen McHale, they're in the right area at the right time so might be from or from around the townlands I've mentioned. 3. Mary, Hi, There are two sites I use: www.mayoancestors.com www.mayo.brsgenealogy.com They are both pay-per-view sites for the actual birth, marriage and death details, but, once you've registered, checking the index is free. By cross referencing between the two sites and comparing the differing information their respective indexes give, it's possible to get a reasonable idea of whether the entry you've found in the index is the person you're looking for. However, I believe that neither index is complete (can anyone update us on that), so finding a single and corresponding entry on both sites, as I did for the name Philip Lenahan, is still not a definite hit. Hence my question. Regards, Dom. -----Original Message----- From: maidremm [mailto:maidremm@windstream.net] Sent: 04 January 2009 19:50 To: david.omalley@blueyonder.co.uk Subject: Re: [IRL-MAYO] BMD registration districts.
