An elderly relative tells me that all my ancestors information was lost in Ireland due to a church being damaged in a storm (she said the church had been washed away but that meybe an exaggeration) I can only assume that the damge was done in 'the big wind' 5th Jan 1839, the timing is right for the dates I am looking for. Does anyone know where Catholic churches were damaged in Mayo during this storm or where I could find the information, any help would be much appreciated. Marge Go to the local post office in Aghamore and ask for Paul Rogers. You can tell him I sent you. He will be very helpful with anything in Aghamore. He also has the local Aghamore book for 2008 there. It comes out every December. Others can correct me, but in my experience you can't search the records yourself at the Heritage Centers. Better to search church and civil records in Dublin at the National Library, GRO, etc., and save your time in Mayo for visiting churches (which may also have records) and homesteads. (Be sure to call before visiting a church to make sure someone will be available to help.) Diane

Hello Bill Was it you who had HIGGINS in your family? If it was you I have now found out that my JAMES HIGGINS born between 1870-1880 was difinitely born in County Mayo. I have found him on the new 1911 UK Census. My James Higgins was in Prescot Lancashire in 1901. Married Mary Ellen Comer (nee Donnelly) from Waterford Ireland in 1902 and then by 1905 they were living in Toxteth Park Liverpool. He died while living at 30 Hornby Street Kirkdale Liverpool in 1938. Don't know what his proper date of birth is yet. He was 26 in 1901, 24 in January 1902, 68 when he died in May 1938 and 31 on the 1911 UK Census. I am glad to hear the info on Irish ancestors making themselves younger, as I have found baptismal records for another Irish ggreat grandmother and her siblings, and found that they were all several yrs older than stated on later census, tombstones, etc. I was somewhat baffled that they all were older than predicted!! This will help in other searches. I did see the "Anne O'Horo" record, the father was a "Patrick" and the mothers names was "Anne Caine", right initials, wrong name. Thanks for your help!! I wish I could give you direct answers to the questions you just posed, but most of the information I have concerns the family after their move to the U.S. May I ask you, please, to identify your Mother by her first name? Perhaps then we can establish a way to exchange verbal information as well as our postings to this website. Thank you. You may know my mother, Neil's granddaughter. Rose was her aunt. I met Fr. Placid when I was a child and remember him fondly. I visited Ballycroy in 2002 and spoke with many Cafferkeys and Conways but I didn't have any information about Neil's parents to share. My mother mentioned that Fr. Placid had done some research but I haven't seen it, although she did show me a copy of a letter Neil wrote to one of his daughters, and a poem he wrote, recalling his childhood in Ballycroy. I'd be delighted to learn whatever you know about Patrick Cafferkey and Mary Conway ( if I have their names correctly), their history in Ballycroy and America and the story behind the change of name to McCaffrey. Hi, To catch all the postings on the subject, I belong to both 'Mayo' mailing lists. A short time ago I posted a question to both lists. One list published the posting immediately, the other took a few days to reject it on two technical points, neither of which has prevented my postings on any of the other lists I belong to. This irritated me and led me to compare the two lists. To anyone with a minimum of familiarity with Rootsweb mailing lists, the name of one 'Mayo' list shows that the subject is the Irish county. The name of the other could easily be mistaken as being for the surname 'Mayo'. One list is vibrantly active while the other is virtually dormant (see the figures on the lists respective homepages under 'browse the archives). With both lists now in their ninth year, any political/personality clash which might have led to one list being set up as a rival to the other should by now be irrelevant, so I'm posting this request to both lists and both administrators. List administrators, please get together and arrange a merger or the closure of one list. Having all 'Mayo' information on one site can only be helpful. Thanks, Dom O'Malley.
