I have added (RC) marriages from Balla 1868/9. For some reason, 1869 is only December. Too late for Edward's baptism but it could help you map out the various McHale families in the parish, perhaps find Edward as a godfather beginning in the 1850s. Griffith's index shows lots of McHales in Turlough in the 1850s, though none in Lack West, so this may take some detective work. Thomas Sadler has contributed the first Mayo obit to IGP's Archives. It is more than an obituary. It is the story of how his John Murray's body was returned to Mayo for burial. I hope you will all take a moment to read it. It is worth it. http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/mayo/obits.htm Thanks to all who share their treasures with others in the archives. :) http://www.genrecords.org/irfiles/ (*hint - use Internet Explorer to submit files. I've hit a brick wall, but I do have the following information. Michael Daly (1832-1900) and Catherine O'Rourke (1838/45-1908) immigrated to the US 1 year apart. He came in 1859, she in 1860. Somewhere within the US they married in 1861. By 1863 they're in Ohio with a child born there. Catherine's brother Martin followed her a couple years later. Martin married Ann O'Donnell. Her parents were Hugh O'Donnell and Midge Johnston/son. On both Catherine's and Martin's death certificate, their parents are clearly John O'Rourke, and Ann Kearney/Kenney (the handwriting here is hard to read). Any suggestions are appreciated. I've posted this to the Cork board, and had the suggestion that these names were from the "north". I've heard both that we're from Cork and also that we're from Mayo. I visited the North Mayo Heritage Centre last year which has a museum and coffee shop. The ladies on the main desk are very helpful. I had a general search done which cost 30 euros which proved unfruitful. Cousin Jean, Thanks for the information. No where near sweltering here, temps have been in the 5 - 30 degree range for the past couple of weeks with snow up to my arse. Keeps all Senior Citizens busy with the shovels and snowblowers. Scheduled to receive up to 27 inches of new white snow on Tuesday ! Thank you very much for John McShane's brother Henry tied to a Rose Forbes. ( did this Rose have needles? (;>= ) By the way, have you gone to: www.1911census.co.uk this site allows you the opportunity to free checks on names and provides you with a sampling of ie. McShane and others, throughout England for the 1911 Census. If you wish a print out there is a credit cost which must be paid for the complete scheme (census). The only difficulty is that it only provided a 10 year span per view. Hi Marge, It cost us around $ 150 to get the complete data on my wife's family back to her great grandfather. My wife knew her heritage back to her grandfather, and basically very little of that! The Mayo heritage centers " are nothing more than computers, in lieu of paper ", run by someone with computer knowledge and not available for search by an individual. As far as I could ascertain, once the computer generates possibilities of heritage the data is reviewed by the elders who are reportedly knowledgable about each specific family. Once cultivated, all of this data is written up in a pamphlet format with hard data, fololowed by softer data, and then data of which everyone can not differentiate, but yet is still reported to you for your assessment. Tuscon is a mile or two away from CO Mayo, " a heritage center, is a heritage center " and an income maker for each locale's economy. No " casual visitor " will ever have the capability of touching the records because of the reckless nature, and destructive capability of someone who feels the " page " should go home with him / her. Highly recommend writing to either of the Mayo Centers asking about your " families of interest ", and you will receive an answer pertaining to what they may be capable of providing for what cost. You may be sure, based upon your knowledge about each group, to become enlightened by what a study might do for=2 0your interest in your family, especially after 15 years of thinking about them. Sent with respect for the almighty dollar, but you can't take it with you anyway. With respect for your interests .....
