Hi. I have recently found the origins of my JORDAN and CONLON family to Kilgarvan which is near Ballina, Co Mayo Henry JORDAN born abt 1809 of Kilgarvan married (date and place unknown) Margaret CONLON born abt 1811 of Kilgarvan Their children Anne born 1835 Liverpool, England James born 1838 Liverpool England Henry born 1842 Kilgarvan, Co Mayo John born 1846 Kilgarvan, Co Mayo Edward born 12 May 1850 Liverpool, England. I have them in the 1851 census living at 5 Ct New Bird Street, Liverpool and can trace them in all the following census. I have not found them in the 1841 which could mean they where already back in Ireland as a family. I tried just Henry name who might have been in Liverpool working, while the rest of the family went back to Co Mayo but I had no success. All known addresses for them are in Liverpool, are very close to the docks.(ie two or three roads) and Henry's occupation was a dock lab. I found one unusual thing with this Jordan family, the name John was used just once in the1846. Edward born 1850 has on his marriage certificate of 1877 his fathers name as 'John.' This has been a red herring for nearly 10 years and found to be incorrect. Edward signed his own name on the marriage certificate and Margaret put her X but I suppose that doesn't mean Edwards was literate, maybe he could just do his name and not recognise an error. Does anyone recognise this family? Does anyone know of any sources I can use for records for County Mayo? I cannot confirm a religion to date either in Irealnd nor Liverpool. Edward married in a catholic church in Liverpool 1877. but could this relate to his wifes religion? While I cannot see a connection to your JORDAN family there may be one waiting to be found! The 1861 census has: at Fawcett Street, New Cross Manchester Hunt Mary Head widow 56 Housekeeper Ireland Hunt Michael son unmarr 20 Cotton Winder " Hunt Ann dau " 18 Cotton Piecer " which may be the same family (see what I mean about ages?) If it is, then the absence of John Hunt is explained by him having moved to Leeds and married Ellen Flynn (on census in Leeds). Daniel Hunt may also have gone to Leeds - can't find him on census but a newspaper report in Leeds in 1869 has a Daniel Hunt age 27 dying in an accident while working on the railways. Hope some of this may be helpful to someone! Sue. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Thanks for the information. My main source was my husband's uncle - years ago I asked him to write everything down he knew about the family. (He has since passed away). He told me the following: His grandfather was John Farrell (1901 census has him as born about 1849 living in Kilbride). John Farrell married twice (I think that he married Catherine Kennedy first and had Mary (b.1878), Catherine (b.1879 - died before adulthood?),Bridget (b.1880)). He then married Anne Corcoran in 1886 (Anne lived at Cannonreshaw - no idea where this was - she was 20). John Farrell is 36. His father is Peter, and Anne Corcoran's father is Patrick - source www.mayoancestors.com civil records. They went onto have Winifred (b.1886), Ann (b.1888), Margaret (b.1892), Celia (his mother) (b.1894), and Kate (b.1901). They also had Patrick but he died age 4. All sisters, except Celia went to US. Lost contact with them. John Farrell's father, Peter Farrell, married Una Forde in Lacken. They are all buried at Lacken. Peter and Una lived in Kilbride. It is not entirely clear but I think from my notes that the Farrells came from Moygownagh, Crossmolina, Co Mayo but I don't know which Farrells. Mary married John Clinch and remarried John? Costelloe. Not sure whether Catherine survived, and I don't know who Bridget married. Winifred was single, Annie married Thomas McHale, Margaret married Cornelius McCarthy, Kate married Thomas Swift. I also have a note that a sister of John Farrell was married to a man named McHale. They were evicted from their farm (Kilcummin?) and they went to US and they got a farm in Minnesota. Five of the family stayed on the farm in Minnesota, 2 left the farm. One was a reporter, William McHale. This note is slightly strange as Annie, John's daughter also married a McHale - it could be that it was John's daughter and not his sister that was evicted. Anyway, that is my entire notes collection. Please contact me if you get any further information. I would love to trace the Farrells in the US. I would also like to track down Peter and Una's marriage and see if I can go back to a further generation. Thanks Yvonne Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
