    1. Re: [IRL-MAYO] Sam Maguire

    3. Hi! I am trying to trace the maternal side of my father's family. I have found that Maguire is a terrifically common name in Mayo!! Also with differing spellings-McGuire and McQuire. I am working on the following: James Maguire(McQuire) b. abt 1835 or 1837 Mayo , married Apr-Jun 1864 Durham to Julia Ann Quin b. abt 1844 poss Co. Cork. James parents were Hugh Maguire (McGuire) b. abt 1817 Mayo, married abt 1838 Cork to Margaret Biggan b. abt 1820 Mayo. They migrated to England abt 1848. Julia Ann had a sister Mary A b. abt 1843 poss Cork. Their parents were ? Quin and Julia Quin b. abt 1825 Ireland. They were living in 1861 on Henry Street, Barton Upon Irwell, Lancashire. Julia (the mother) poss died 1865 in Durham. That is about all I know of these families thus far. Best regards, rob Oceanstrands wrote: > Hi Rob, > > Sam Maguire's family lived in the same townland in Co. Cork for over two hundred years. He was a close friend of Michael Collins. His family was Church of Ireland (Anglican) and he was very closely involved with the GAA (the Gaelic Athletic Association) during his time in England as well as when he returned to Ireland. Ballysakeery and Kilmoremoy are two different civil parishes. The civil parishes were generally the same as the Church of Ireland (Anglican) parishes and had different boundaries than the Roman Catholic parishes. Mary Ann in all probability is one person whose property is in both civil parishes. Here's the civil parish map for County Mayo, click on each civil parish to find the names of the towns and townlands in each: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/civilparish/index.cfm?fuseaction=GetMap&CityCounty=Mayo Her location i.e. townland in each entry is called the Tideway of the River Moy. The River Moy is a famous fishing location in County Mayo Here's some information about the River Moy: http://www.northwestfisheries.ie/Moy/river_moy_system.htm You'll see Thomasine Little in the 1901 Mayo census following is a fishery proprietor. There are no surviving census records before 1901. Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 with Protestant marriages beginning in 1845. Church parish records would be the possible source for additional family information if they survive for the years you need. You can contact the Church of Ireland (Anglican) Representative Church Body in Dublin to find out if the church parish records survive for the years you need and how they might be accessed: http://www.ireland.anglican.org/index.php?do=information&id=63 Contact information is included in that link.
