Dear 'Oceanstrands, when a british soldier was discharged to pension or if he died in service, then the attestation papers for him are in Kew. Unfortunately, my Lawrence died from a surfeit of alcohol so his papers would have been destroyed. I understand that, when a soldier died his place of birth is entered at the back of the last muster book in which he would have been entered. To add to my frustration, this muster has been lost. Thank you for your reply. Dear Listers, I am trying to find out where my greatgrandfather, Lawrence Waters, was born. It would have been around 1844. He joined the army in 1856, enlisting in Trim. Giving his birth year as 1840, he would have received the bounty of a man instead of that for a boy. He then went abroad and was only back in Ireland for a short spell of duty in 1876. I have no idea which part of Ireland he came from. The three indications I have for his year of birth are on his marriage certificate, 1871 census and death certificate. They all indicate a birth year of 1844. His marriage and death certificates state that his father's name was James and that he was a clerk. His eldest child's christian names were Kathleen Jane Etheridge (Kathleen after his mother or a sister? Jane Etheridge were his mother's christian names). His children were baptized by the roman catholic army chaplain. Have any of you come across Lawrence? Yours sincerely, Anne Vinnicombe

Someone a few weeks ago gave a Family History Library film number for early marriages in Westport. I wrote it down, deleted the e-mail and lost my note. I would appreciate that film # again and I promise not to lose it. Thanks Madeleine

I'm looking for anyone that can help me locate any relatives of James Joseph McDonnell. James was born 22 Nov 1925 in Swinford, County Mayo, Ireland. He was the son of James McDonnell & Mary McNeela. James joined the US Navy and first settled in Chicago Illinois and eventually settled in Racine Wisconsin after serving in the Navy. James then married my Mom's aunt, Clara Norman Schmidt, aka Dodo, in Waukegan Illinois on 6 Dec 1953. James' life ended quite early when he died as the result of an automocile accident on 10 Oct 1958, between Racine & Milwaukee Wisconsin. I would like to learn more about Uncle Jimmy and share what I know about his life here in the US. I also have some pictures that were amongst my Mom's aunt's posessions that I would like to know if they are of his family. Any leads at all would be extremely appreciated. I don't know anything at all about his parents or if he had any siblings. Thanks & SISU! The Griffith's index on failteromhat.com doesn't show any O'Cannys but does show Cannys and Canneys, mostly in Clare and Donegal, but a few in Mayo. Diane
Searching for any info on the surname of O'Cany/O'Canny/O'canney. My ancestor, Daniel O'Canny, lived in Westmoreland County, Virginia, in the Colony of Virginia, from at least the mid 1600s until his death in 1715. I know nothing about him other than that he had two daughters, Elizabeth and Sarah. Sarah, my direct ancestor, married Osmon Crabb in Westmoreland County. I think that Daniel O'Canny may have been born in Ireland but I do not have any proof of that at this time. I have also seen the names of David O'Canny and William O'Canny in Westmoreand County. Any info at all on this surname in Mayo County would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Karen

That part of it is free. You only pay if you want to see a specific record and for that you need to buy credits using your credit card. No other "cards" are involved. There is no other way of using their service. You can still get a great deal out of their site without paying, like looking for a marriage and entering both parties' names. You can get a possible match if both appear same year, same parish. If you can't get both names that way, then you don't have a match. It takes a bit of trial and error to get the best out of it. I certainly wouldn't bother getting civil records from them. Use the LDS for Civil Registration: births 1864- 1880, 1900-1913,1930-55. marriages 1845 (Non-RC)-1870, marriages (RC) 1864-70 deaths 1864-70 (These are the actual certs. not just indexes) Find births on the IGI/familysearch website -it almost always gives you the film number. Then order the film at your local LDS. Where are you located? If London, they have almost all the available Irish films in stock. Other centers with a large Irish population may do the same. LDS Films are £2.70 and you see the original; records from IFHF are 5 euro, but it's not the original record, just the details from the original- see SAMPLES on their website Or you can get all the certs from Ireland GRO. _www.groireland.ie_ (http://www.groireland.ie) yes, it makes it easier if you have the Volume/page number details, but not necessary as you have all the details I sent you. About 8 euro each now, not sure, they keep going up. If you insist on this option, then make sure you ask for a photocopy of the original, you do not want a new certificate. I don't know why you are having trouble downloading flash-player . It's the simplest download possible, assuming you are using XP You don't have to DO anything and it only takes seconds. Try again and see what happens, or what the error message is.
