As to why Bridgets usually became Delias and Dellas when they emigrated, as my grandmother did, I'm told they thought Bridget sounded too "old country," Delia or Della more modern. Diane

According to family information he was born in Westport circa 1892, then moved to England and settled in Middlesbrough. He married Katie Callaghan in England(her father was from Carlingford, Louth). Their marriage certificate states that Patricks father was Anthony McDonough, a farm labourer, but I don't know whether he came to England, or stayed in Ireland, and the names Anne, Anthony, Harry/Henry, James and Nicholas have been mentioned as possible siblings. I beleive at the time that Patrick left for England the family "scattered", although I don't know whether Anthony stayed in Ireland. I appreciate this isn't a great deal to go on but any replies would be a fantastic help. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hi Nancy, It's the same here in Ireland, many people named Bridget are called Delia. Delia is the nickname for Bridget. They both stem from the name Bedelia/Bidelia, an old Irish Gaelic/Celtic name meaning high one. The name Bridget, St. Bridget derives from that as well as Delia. The first is the descendents of Winifred Malley (b. 1928) and William Moore (b. 1928.) The Moore family ended up in newport or Clinish, Co. Mayo. They had children, and their son, Domnick moore (b. 1868 in Ballylan, Laoighis, Ireland) was my great grandfather. Domnick married Bridget Fergus (b. 1861) Bridget's father was John Fergus, b. 1840, was from Gorthfary, Argaugh, Newport, Co. Mayo (Burrishoole parish). I don't know who his wife was. John Fergus' children were Bridget, Thomas, Alice, Edward, John, Patrick, William and Michael. Their daughter Bridget (like her mom, b. 1895) went by Delia, then changed to Della when she immigrated to the US when she was 15. Bridget/Della married James O'Neill, whose family was from co. His father is stated as John, a teacher. I found a reference to a marriage of John Sheridan Gilbert and Eliza Cannon in Belfast in 1856. The Cannon link made me wonder if these are John C's parents. My father told me that his Grandfather (John snr) was a teacher in Balina on the West Coast of Ireland. I found a John Gilbert listed as a classical teacher, in the 1881 directory of Ballina. How John C came to be born in Co Cork (1862 /-1)if his parents were married in Belfast (1856), and then were in Co Mayo working (1881), I'm not sure. What I'm missing is the links between all these bits of information. I'm hoping your email linked to this site is still active. There was a Michael who appeared in Griffith's Valuation. There is a reference to the Treacys in the Folklore Essays collected at Cullane National School in 1937/1938. It states "Another family lived in front of Mrs. Beirne's called the Treacys. They also went to foreign lands. The garden where they lived is called 'Gainne Treasa' (Treacy's Garden)." Dear Oceanstrands, it took a bit of detective work: Before 1st January, 2002 it was expensive to find out anything from the 1901 census. After due, monetary, consideration I sent in a query. One had to be a) the person; b) have the person's written permission; c) have written permission of a direct descendant. Also the person's address had to be given. I sent in the form, giving myself permission being as it was my grandmother I was enquiring about. The address posed a problem but my father was 6 months old and my grandfather a coast guard. So I gave 'Coast Guard Cottages', Mothecombe, Devon as the address. The reply came back stating Cork as my grandmother's place of birth. Next, I sent to Dublin for her birth certificate. What came back was not as informative as the ones for mainland Britain but gave her father's name, rank and regiment. Was this the correct person? Well, a search of the regimental registers gave me more children. Their christian names were family names, which was a clue. I followed Lawrence back through the regimental musters until I came to an entry: volunteer. So that was when he had joined. At that date the regiment was recruiting in Trim. Lawrence married in Portsmouth, which is where his wife was from. In the 1871 census his place of birth was given as 'Ireland'. Family History can be hard work! Hi Anne, If all Lawrence's British military records were destroyed, then how do you know he enlisted in the British Army in Trim and gave his year of birth as 1840 and was on assignment to Ireland in 1876?
