Are these names more common for Co Mayo? Thanks so much for your input. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I intend to hold the census info you sent until I can prove or disprove through further research, as I am all too aware of people grasping at straws with no concrete proof to substantiate the links within the family, or differing geographical areas. Patrick and Kate (Katie) married in 1920. I have the certificate, but all it says of his father is that his name was Anthony and he was a Farm Labourer. (Whether in Ireland or England I don't know). Once again thank you for your help Anne Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Eilis_OHara Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/7987.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I would not recommend adopting a family of McDonaghs in a different location in Co. Mayo just because of a similarity of given names and the surname in a transcribed census. Many people abroad wouldn't be familiar with just how common given names and surnames can be here in Ireland and it wouldn't have been at all unusual to find that commonality in several locations in Co. Mayo. Genealogically, however you want to be sure that you link correctly to your actual family line in Co. Mayo -- not just based on surname and given names in a transcribed census that may have omissions from the original census records. You would find genealogy links not by pairing common given and surnames but by finding civil and church documents to link your Patrick back to his actual family members in Co. Mayo. Hopefully you'll find Patrick's baptismal information at the church in Middlesbrough where he was married and that will confirm his birthplace in Co. Mayo. What year did he marry? If the church doesn't have the baptismal information you can search the other genealogy records sources I listed in my first message. There's also a possibility Patrick may have had other relations in that area in England with him. They may have been witnesses at his marriage or sponsors for his children's baptisms. As I mentioned the online Mayo census is transcribed from the microfilms held by the Latter Day Saints in the US and as such -- and as with any transcription -- may not be complete. The site is administered from the US. However, the National Archives of Ireland are in the process of digitising both the 1911 and 1901 Irish census records and putting them online free. You can then access the actual original census records images from the original records. Here's a link to the Irish National Archives website with information about that: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/about/futureplans.html Regards. Unfortunately these are not my Callaghans, I managed to make contact with them last year, and have the full history for Katie, and am awaiting further info on the rest of the family. Basically it's Patrick I'm struggling with, but thanks to responses to this query, now have some good leads to follow. I'm really gateful for the time you spent doing this for me, and, hopefully it may fill in someone elses gaps. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It certainly looks like these could be my McDonoughs, although there's no Anne (as yet) Mary Ellen was a family name (Ellie). When my great grandmother Bridget?Casey?immigrated from Mayo County to America she changed her name to Beatrice.? I read somewhere that it was common at that time for Bridget to become Beatrice when immigrating because Bridget was such a common name and because Bridget was sometimes considered to be synonymous with servant. Claudia -----Original Message----- From: DLCulhane@cs.com To: irl-mayo@rootsweb.com Sent: Fri, 1 May 2009 5:30 am Subject: Re: [IRL-MAYO] Moore's of Westport, County Mayo As to why Bridgets usually became Delias and Dellas when they emigrated, as my grandmother did, I'm told they thought Bridget sounded too "old country," Delia or Della more modern. Request a search of the civil birth records for his birth record, form is available on the General Register Office website: http://www.groireland.ie If none, then look for his US naturalisation records and his US church marriage record. Each one may include where he was born in Ireland. With that birth location you'd then need to search for the baptismal record in the local parish in Ireland where he was born. Mayo census and didn't find any McDonough families in Westport. I didn't find any families with Anthony as the head of household either. You can search the census at: http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/census.shtml You could have the Ireland General Register Office search for the civil birth cert: http://www.groireland.ie You could look in the 1901 and 1911 England census records to see if family members are there. Also check Patrick's obituary in England to see if it confirms where he was born in Ireland. Contact the church where he was married and see if there;s a copy of his Irish baptismal cert there or confirmation of his baptism in Ireland -- may include his parish of birth.
