Author: DianeCulhane46 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/8456.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I couldn't find Winifred or Winnie in the 1901 or 1911 Irish census. However, since you have a sister Nora for Michael, and presumably an approximate birth year, you might look in family search for birth registrations for the two of them in the same registration district. That could narrow down the parish for you. (Knock is in Claremorris district, since someone else mentioned that as a possibility, and Kilmore in Belmullet.) There is no townland mentioned on the death certificate and it would seem that he was never married to Hannah Lomas in Manchester. The family rumour is that he was already married when he left Ireland and that when he died my Great Grandmother was left destitute as they were unmarried. One other clue I have is that he had a sister called Nora(h) in Co.Mayo and my Great Aunt Winifred and Grandma Catherine Cafferky were sent from Manchester to stay with her as there were so many children at home in Manchester. I'll have another word with my mother to see if she can remember anything else she was told. Thank you Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: DianeCulhane46 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/8456.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I couldn't find any Michael Caffertys born in Mayo around 1872 on rootsireland.ie or familysearch.org, but I found lots of Michael Cafferkys, so I suspect that was the spelling. The closest I could come to Glencara or Blencara was Glenlara in the parishes of Kilmore and Burrishoole. I found only 4 listings for Cafferky in Griffith's, in the parishes of Kilmoremoy, Kilmore, Kilcommon, and Kilbefad. The Cafferky in Kilmore was in Aghaglasheen townland, not terribly far from Glenlara, so that might be your family. Unfortunately, I couldn't find Cafferkys in either townland in 1901, but they were in other townlands. If Michael married in Ireland, you might look for his marriage. Otherwise, get the most likely birth registrations from the GRO, the LDS, or rootsireland.ie, though it will be hard to know which is yours without more information. Author: CathPritchard53 Surnames: Cafferty Cafferky O'Boyle Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/8456/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am trying to trace my Great Grandfather's birthplace in Co.Mayo and have very few leads as most of his children except one is dead. I have found him with my Great grandmother from about 1912 in Manchester. He died in 1925. They had at least 8 children. My grandmother and great aunt spent holidays in Co.Mayo and the name of the place they remembered was either Glencara or Blencara. The surname has been corrupted over the generations with some descendants called Cafferty and some Cafferky. However my mother is adamant that her grandfather was known as Michael Cafferty O'Boyle. I'm not sure if that helps at all. I would appreciate any help Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
