His parents were Patrick McGarry [b. circa 1840] and Margaret Kearns [b. circa 1841]. They married in Roscommon on 15 Jan 1865. Patrick's father was a Timothy McGarry, born circa 1815. Margaret's father was a Michael Kearns [also Kerins], born circa 1815. Margaret and Patrick had the following children: Thomas born July 1867 Mary Sep 1869 John Oct 1871 (may have died in Mass, USA in 1905) Michael Sep 1873 Martin Aug 1875 Timothy Oct 1877 (I don't know any more about any of these children yet) Michael McGarry was living in Ballyhuanis, County Mayo, for his job when the 1901 census was conducted, and then he came to Claremorris, County Mayo to work at the train station as a Railway Foreman. He was a lodger at my Great Grandmother's house at The Square, Claremorris, and went on to marry her. She was Sara Mary Gordon [b. 26 Feb 1875. d. 15 May 1945]. They married on 11 Nov 1909 at Claremorris Catholic Church. Present were Michael Tolan, and Sara's sister Elizabeth Gordon. Michael and Sara had two sons, Timothy [b. 1912 - d. 1996] and Thomas Gerard McGarry [b. 1916 - d. 1983]. Timothy emigrated to Australia while Thomas (known as 'Ger') McGarry remained in Claremorris. Sara died in 1945 and the obituary I have for her does not mention Michael. I am completely unable to find anything of what became of Michael and nobody seems to remember him. There are other factors to this story which I won't share here but if anyone has any information about Michael or any of the above mentioned McGarrys, I'd be delighted to hear from you, please e-mail me and I can provide further details. I have ordered incorrect death certs for some Michael McGarrys previously, I would assume he must have died in a window between 1916 and 1945. I assumed he would have died in Claremorris but I can't find anyone that seems to fit the bill in that area. He is apparently buried with Sara at Ballinasmalla Graveyard near Claremorris, but we only erected the gravestone in recent years so we don't have any dates. Any info would be very much appreciated as I've spent a very long time seeking info and can't make any ground on this. Author: DianeCulhane46 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.ireland.may.general/8469.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thinking further, I suspect Claremorris town was called Clare Town on the revised valuations (not to be confused with just Clare). When you get the film, go to the Kilcolman parish section, then the Clare Town, and look for Thomas's entry. The most recent entries are shown first, so it's best to go to the end of the section, which will show the same information as on the original Griffith's page, just handwritten, then work backwards to more recent revisions. Changes were handwritten in as property changed hands, and every few years a new page was created. If you know someone in the area who is familiar with Irish genealogy, see if they can go with you to look at the film, as it can be confusing the first time. Good luck! I've seen Xes by names of people I know were literate. The revised valuations are tricky. They're organized by electoral district (in your case Claremorris, on films 0857528 and 29), within that by civil parish (in your case Kilcolman), and within that by townland. Unfortunately, I don't see the Claremorris townland listed, so will have to ask a friend who knows those lists well which it might be on and get back to you. I hadn't seen Thomas on Griffith's so that's some new info, providing it's the right Thomas. I only know one other fact about him; he had some involvement in the unsuccessful Fenian revolt that took place in 1867, so he was definitely alive then. I don't know any details. I've just gone through my paperwork again to find other clues, and I see that when Bridget Martyn (Rushe) died on 24 May 1879, the informant on her death cert was a Thomas Martyn who was present at her death. He just leaves 'his mark X' so he must have been illiterate and somebody else has signed his name for him. That may be a different Thomas, perhaps a brother but it's very possible it was her and Kate's father. I will look into the revised valuations - never done that so not sure what's involved. I could order the death cert for that Catherine also - it's well worth a try! Thanks. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. However, there is a registration of the death of Catherine Martin in Claremorris district, 1807-72, vol. 9, p. 127. You could get the revised valuations for Claremorris and see when Thomas's property passed to other hands, most likely his widow or eldest son. You could also get Catherine's registration from the LDS and see if she lived in Claremorris town and if she was a widow. She was born circa 1839, and was described her as being of "prime Galway stock" while the 1901 and 1911 Census lists her as being born in Mayo. Kate was married to Irish Land Leaguer and patriot PJ Gordon [ also written as Gordan ], he was born 25 Jan 1839 in Tuam, County Galway, died 10 Jun 1899 in Claremorris Workhouse, Co. Mayo] and Kate was also involved in politics herself. PJ also ran a very successful boot making business from the Square, Claremorris where they lived. Kate and PJ married in Claremorris Catholic Church on 9 Feb 1863. Witnesses to the marriage: John Prendergast, Honor Cavanagh. The Church marriage record does not provide any further information. Kate died 28 Apr 1916 at her residence of The Square, Claremorris, County Mayo, Ireland. Kate and PJ's children were as follows: > Mary Honora Gordon [I don't have any dates] > Anna Maria Gordon [1863 - unknown] > Bridget Gordon [1867 - unknown] > Delia Gordon [1867 - 1930] *Better known for being 'The First Cure at Knock' > Joseph Gordon [1870 - unknown] > Sara Mary Gordon [1875 - unknown] * My Great Grandmother > Thomas M Gordon [1876 - unknown] > Michael Joseph Gordon [1878 - 1957] > Winifred [Cissy] Gordon [1881 - 1896] > Elizabeth Gordon [1886 - unknown] I can provide more info on the above children if necessary. Kate father's name was Thomas Martyn. I don't know anything about him. I do not know who Kate's mother was but am trying to figure that out. Kate had a sister named Bridget Martyn. Bridget was born circa 1838 and died 24 May 1879 in Claremorris. Bridget married a George Rushe or Rush, a Tailor, in Claremorris Catholic Church, on 13 Jan 1858, pt - Patt Conry, Mary Cantin. George Rushe was born circa 1817 and died 12 Nov 1912 in Claremorris, County Mayo. Bridget and George had a daughter, Sara [born circa 1860] and they also lived at The Square, Claremorris. Sara died suddenly on 26 Mar 1905. She worked with her father as a seamstress. I do not know if there were any other children. I have found a Catherine Martin who was baptised in Claremorris Catholic Church on 8 January 1841. Parents - Thomas Martin and Catherine Lyon- sponsors - George Blackhole, Mary Lyon. Perhaps this is my Kate Martin, I can't find a baptism for Bridget and have hit a dead end on this. I do not know Kate's mother's name so it's very hard to prove anything and I can't work further back with this line. I've been at a dead end for well over a year now, so any help very much appreciated. Attached is Kate's obituary. Perhaps some of the names may click with someone.
