Thanks, this is exactly what I was looking for, it actually helps a lot, at least to use as a guide. Hi John, I found Kilfian listed here: http://homepage.eircom.net/~oflannery/ca/tithe.htm This appears to be a listing of where you would find the information on microfilm, etc. It is not a list of the actual names... however, I have found some online list of names when people have transcribed them and posted them. I hope this helps! Thanks, Steph Stephanie Morgan Grants Officer Office of Sponsored Projects 11 Rope Ferry Road, #6210 Hanover, NH 03755-1404 Ph: 603-646-3977 Fx: 603-646-3670
--- [email protected], [email protected] wrote: Does anyone know any online sources for the Tithes for Rathreagh and Lifian parishes? I haven't been able to find any. --- end of quote --- I think that what does exist online has been hand-entered by individuals and uploaded to web sites. I do not think that they are all entered as I cannot find certain parishes. There are obviously the 'paper/microfilm' sources, but to my knowledge what exists online (meaning you can google and search at your computer without ordering anything) is what people have been able to upload. Having said that - occasionally, I do see a new uploaded parish, so it's always worth checking regularly, but you may want to turn your attention to 'original' sources instead of online ones... There are several folks on this listserv who are well-versed in the 'original' sources, so I am sure that they will post something to help you out. Hi all, I am researching my great-grandfather, Thomas Loughney. I know he arrived in the US about 1865, and was born Dec 1842 in Ireland. Thomas had 2 sons born in the US, John Joseph and Patrick. I have been searching the Griffith's valuations on http://www.askaboutireland.ie, and have found a bunch of Loughney's but spelled Loghney, which I assume is a transcription error. I noticed that there are a number of Thomas Loghney's: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&Submit.x=0&Submit.y=0&Submit=Submit&familyname=loghney&firstname=thomas&baronyname=&countyname=&unionname=&parishname= KILCUMMIN, KILCUMMIN; BALLYGARRY, KILCUMMIN; CARROWTRASNA KILCUMMIN; Upper KEELOGES, LACKAN; Lower KEELOGES, LACKAN; LECARROWNTEMPLE, LACKAN; KILLOGEARY, LACKAN I am also cross-referencing John's as well as John is very common in my family (considering my grandfather was John Joseph, my father was John Thomas, and I am John Alexander (Alexander is both my maternal grandfather's middle name as well as my godfather's name)) - I am assuming that there is a high likelihood that John at least his father's name or brother's name. John Loghney was listed in: KILCUMMIN, KILCUMMIN; KILCUMMIN, KILCUMMIN; CARROWTRASNA, KILCUMMIN; CARROWTRASNA, KILCUMMIN My questions are: 1) the left most column of the pages have a number, are these essentially a 'lot' number? 2) the 2nd leftmost column has letters, and if they are a, b, etc. - can I assume these are multiple houses/cabins on the same lot? 3) can I also assume people living on the same lot most likely were family? 4) Would my great grandfather at age 14 be too young to be listed on the Valuation? Even if, for example, his father died? 5) In the Valuations, there are some curly brackets in the 2nd left column. Can I assume these indicate grouping? 6) I have seen some people referencing 'tranditional' naming practices for male children in the area, but haven't seen the 'rules' - anyone have pointers? 7) Any other suggestions? Tracking down this information is quite vexing, so I am open to any suggestions! Thanks! John
John, here's a link to an article that will answer most of your questions about Griffith's: http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/GRIFFITH/more_to_griffiths.html I can order some of them quickly here. Loghney would not be a transcription error for Loughney, but simply a reflection of the fact that many names didn't have standardized spellings in those days. Griffith's occupiers were heads of households, so if your greatgrandfather's father had died, the lease probably passed to his widow , brother, or oldest son. You can follow the passing on of leases on the revised valuations, which the LDS have filmed. There were no hard-and-fast rules for names, but the first children were often named for the grandparents, the next round for the parents, then aunts and uncles. However, among my ancestors, only about half the families followed that practice. Diane

I love to hear the tidbits of info on the area since I've not been able to visit there myself yet. My cousin and grand uncle visited the old KEARNS farm back in 2005 though they knew it was no longer occupied by a KEARNS and took a few pictures. Another cousin from here in the USA visited last year and Catherine NALLY from Knock showed them around. My great grandmother Margaret KEARNS was born on that farm (dtr of Bryan KEARNS and Mary Anne CALLAGHAN - of the Lakehill CALLAGHANs). Is there anything else you can tell me about the KEARNS/FLATLEY/CURRY branch? Joe Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Thank you Nancy and Diane for the suggestions. Rose
I have an eleven year old great granddaughter that is very much interested in the history of Ireland. Her great great great grandparents came from Co Mayo, Ireland. For Christmas I would like to buy her some Irish history books for children of her age. Does anyone have any suggestions? Rose
The Long March tells the story of how the Choctaw Indians of Oklahoma sent aid to the starving Irish during the potato famine (many Choctaw had starved along the Trail of Tears years earlier), and is aimed at younger children. Black Potatoes is also about the potato famine, aimed at children 12 and up. Both very good. You can Google to read more about them. Diane

I have run accross another Bridget Herbert but would have to look up the info again. do you use the family search from the LDS online? I may have picked up the other Bridget there. Good luck! there are many free sites to cruise genealogy online. my local library subscribes to heritage quest which has most all of the census years transcribed and very easy to use. check at your local library and se if they might pay for that subscription for their patrons to use. Galway. I am part of a local community group, Ireland Reaching Out, searching for people of Irish heritage abroad with a connection to our parish. My reason for writing is to invite you to become part of this exciting new initiative (www.irelandxo.com) and also to invite you, your family and friends, to a very special celebration in June 24th-30th, 2012. In June 2012, the parish community of Aughrim will be part of a Week of Welcomes festival. Activities will include visits to ancestral townlands, talks on local history and tours/leisure activities in the local South East Galway area. Throughout this week, participants will be welcomed to the parish, re-introducing them to their communities and place of origin. As a nominated Week of Welcomes co-ordinator, I have been asked on behalf of the people of the parish of Aughrim to invite you and members of your family to this exciting event. We hope our invitation is of interest and that you will want to learn much more. We look forward to hearing from you. Please visit our website www.irelandxo.com Best wishes Mary Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
