Hi all, I am looking at Griffiths Valuation for Mayo, and I believe I have found my 2xgreat grandfather, James Cunningham, in Cashel townland. I am somewhat confused, as there are a large number of Cunninghams (John Senior, John Junior, Peter, Thomas and James). They each seem to listed multiple times in Cashel, see below: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&Submit.x=31&Submit.y=18&Submit=Submit&familyname=cunningham&firstname=First+Name&baronyname=&countyname=MAYO&unionname=KILLALA&parishname=KILCUMMIN Is it correct to assume that if description is just 'land' then no one is living on it; only "Land and house" would be where someone was living? Secondly, on www.askireland.ie I looked at the maps, and I only see numbers 1 - 14 on the map, but the valuation lists 1 - 24. I am slightly confused, and hope someone could help me make sense of this. Finally, anyone know where I might be able to find birth, marriage and death records for Cashel townland? Would those be in Kilcummin or Killala? Thanks, John

I have lots of Butlers in my family from there. Have found much info from 2 sites: Google Pat Deese geneology - he has lists from that area of marriages, births and baptisms, deaths etc. Also try "mayoancestors.com". I'm sure you will find what you are looking for there. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This is my ninth year of sending the Irish Christmas Welcome. Enjoy! Mary An Irish Christmas Welcome 'Twas Christmas Eve at St. Mary's and the Pastor, Father Gibb, Was watching Michael, the sexton, as he carefully fixed the Crib. The sheep and the oxen were standing guard-the straw was neatly piled; And Mary and Joseph were kneeling, admiring their tender Child. The star that guided the Magi flooded the stable with light. "'Tis beautiful, Michael," the Pastor said. "It looks like that First Holy Night." "Ah, faith, and I think it is terrible," the sexton replied with a frown, "The way that our Savior had to be born in that miserable pagan town." "Sure, there isn't an Irishman living, much less is there one in the grave,' >From County Derry down to Kerry that'd let Him be born in a cave." "If the Irish were living in Bethlehem, Joseph need not have knocked; Sure, Mary and he could have walked right in, for our doors are never locked." "And if they had come to my cottage, they'd have found the door full wide- 'Cead mile failte," I'd say to them, "God bless ye and step inside.' "I'd shake up the old turf fire, and make them as warm as could be; And I'd have my wife, God rest her, make them a pot of tea. "And if the soldiers of Herod came after the baby, the fakes; Me and the neighbors would rout them, like Patrick drove out the snakes. "'Tis a pity, Father, I tell you, without a word of lie, That there wasn't an Irishman livin' when Mary and Joseph passed by." -Edward J. McTague

Hi Stephanie, Thanks - I was thinking that I might need to revert to microfilm sources. I think that has to wait until after the holidays. I haven't been able to find any. --- end of quote --- I think that what does exist online has been hand-entered by individuals and uploaded to web sites. I do not think that they are all entered as I cannot find certain parishes. There are obviously the 'paper/microfilm' sources, but to my knowledge what exists online (meaning you can google and search at your computer without ordering anything) is what people have been able to upload. Having said that - occasionally, I do see a new uploaded parish, so it's always worth checking regularly, but you may want to turn your attention to 'original' sources instead of online ones... There are several folks on this listserv who are well-versed in the 'original' sources, so I am sure that they will post something to help you out. Hi Diane, Thanks for sending this, this helped. I actually had a bit of luck and I was able to get my ggrandfather's death certificate after asking a 2nd time for it. With that, I have been able to get fairly unique names for his parents and found them on Griffiths. Thanks much for the help, John -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of ext [email protected] Sent: Thursday, December 08, 2011 5:10 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [IRL-MAYO] Need a little help navigating Griffiths Valuations John, here's a link to an article that will answer most of your questions about Griffith's: http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/GRIFFITH/more_to_griffiths.html I can order some of them quickly here. Loghney would not be a transcription error for Loughney, but simply a reflection of the fact that many names didn't have standardized spellings in those days. Griffith's occupiers were heads of households, so if your greatgrandfather's father had died, the lease probably passed to his widow , brother, or oldest son. You can follow the passing on of leases on the revised valuations, which the LDS have filmed. There were no hard-and-fast rules for names, but the first children were often named for the grandparents, the next round for the parents, then aunts and uncles. However, among my ancestors, only about half the families followed that practice.
