    1. Re: [IRL-MAYO] Accuracy of records on the internet

    3. Morning Nancy Thank you for your reply. I have looked at photocopies of the LDS film and as I said the two internet sites. When I find some data for the first time I think "OH", the next time I think "That is interesting", the third time it's "are we must have something here " In this case I feel that I need to know that the data, whilst coming from the same source [ the parish register}, was interpreted by different people and not just a direct copy . For example UK GRO BMD records and the LOCAL registration records whilst being the same data are from two different sources and processed by different people. Again thank you for your help regards Peter Collins Cheltenham UK ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nancy" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, December 27, 2011 7:04 PM Subject: Re: [IRL-MAYO] Accuracy of records on the internet > If possible why don't you get the LDS film?

    2. Peter, I don't have your original e-mail but remember birth registration didn't start until 1864 and it didn't catch on at once. Also, no site has everything. For example, familysearch.org has the civil registration indexes (most of them) but few baptisms. Rootsireland.ie has many more baptisms, but not in all counties. Diane

    3. Good evening all, I hope that someone may help answer the problem that I have I have a COLLINS family from Mayo covering the dates 1854 till 1863. The records have been transcribed from the parish records on an LDS film. To say that the writing was not of the best would be an understatement. I found similar regards on " IRISH FAMILY HISTORY FOUNDATION site" and "MAYO, IRELAND GENEALOGY RECORDS" The problem is that the interpretation of the hand writing with some of the dates and a name on the film do not agree with that of the internet. While I appreciate the problem with hand written records; The question is "Would the transcription on the two internet site be done by TWO different people; Or would one site have copied the data of the other site and the transcription was done by ONE person"? The data on both sites are the same, Do I accept that data is correct and the LDS transcriptions are incorrect? Any help or advice would be appreciated CARA While I know you do not normally deal with Co Mayo, I appreciate your vast knowledge with Family History. I am also not sure which is your correct E mail address so I am sending to both. Hope I am not causing you any problems. I look forward to your comments Regards to all Peter Collins Cheltenham UK

    3. If possible why don't you get the LDS film? Anyone looking at the filmed records could have a different interpretation of what it says. If you look and compare it to your research you can weigh what is correct or not. Someone did that in the Irish Family History Foundation and in any other database online, it is all about interpretation. Also what LDS transcriptions? Note that five Cunninghams leased land in the townland but only two leased houses--John Sr. and Peter. James leased one of his plots with Peter, so I'd guess Peter was his father or older brother. Only Peter and John Sr. leased houses, so I'd also guess James lived with Peter at the time of the Valuation. I also often find the maps hard to read. Perhaps someone else can help with the numbering question. Kilcummin civil parish is part of Lacken Catholic parish, so that's where you should look for baptisms and marriages.
