(If you look at a map of Mayo, Kilmore is the peninsula in the northwest corner.) The LDS have filmed Kilmore-Erris baptismal and marriage records from 1860 to 1881. Civil death registration didn't begin until 1864, and I don't see a death for Mary Togher in the death registration index for 1864 (she would have been registered under her married name). I also don't see a marriage or death for Barbara. Diane Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This is in response to the Jan. 2nd message concerning MELVINs from the Ballina area of County Mayo, Ireland on [email protected] Over many years, there have been various contacts by MELVIN people who married into McCAWLEY and O'BOYLE families of County Mayo. Look into the archival Rootsweb files. Many fine MELVINs remain in this Ireland coastal area today. So far, our mid-19th C. immigrants from County Mayo seemed to first settled around Luzerne Co., Pennsylvania, probably getting employment in the coal mines through their many relatives. By 1900, many had moved on west with their 1st born generation. When not ducking the Census, they favor Irish RC given names: Patrick, James, John, Michael, Owen. Our various family tales all include an early Scotland origin. We have not been able to connect to a common primogenitor; such individual records may be lost in the mist of time. A Captain Patrick MELVIN is recorded in The Marquis of Ormonde Manuscripts (GoogleBooks) as arriving April 1679 at Kinsale, Ireland with Earl of Dunbarton's infantry regiment. In Kinsale's 1786 Registry of Deeds Index is listed a John & Mary MELVIN. What are the origins of earlier MELVINs who settled around North Carolina? Ireland? Scotland? Their given names of Andrew & Daniel lean to Scotland. A prominent Lord MELVIN shows up around Midlothian, Scotland and figured into the Queen Mary escapade. Earliest I've come across is a 16th August 1487 Bond of Manrent by John Melville, heir apparent of Raith, to Sir John Wemyss of that ilk. This may be in Wemyss Barony, Firth of Forth, Scotland. Later was an Andrew MELVIN, noted Presbyterian advocate. So there are a great many obscure ancient papers laying about both sides of the pond mentioning the name, be it MELVIN or MELVILLE. Keep the puzzle pieces in contact via these message postings. Maureen Melvin Morrow
Agree with Diane. However, RYDER is a Mayo name. Especially around Westport area. My thought is perhaps the PA RYDER family is linked to either the birth mother or birth father. Has the death certificate for Patrick HENNIGAN/HENNEGHAN in PA been checked out?? Was the surname changed at adoption?? If there is a PA certificate, names of parents could be on it but may or may not be those of the birth parents. However, could be a clue. Also marriage license/marriage certificate at parish church. Census records after RYDER family took custody. I would come in through the "side door". Check out the RYDER family Mary Ellen Chambers ________________________________ From: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Wed, January 4, 2012 7:33:21 AM Subject: Re: [IRL-MAYO] The Henneghan Family from County Mayo, Ireland This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. There are 3 Ellen's but none in the Poor Law Union of Newport. Newport is a Poor Law Union, a Townland and a Town. Parish of Burrishoole, Newport. In the 1853 Griffiths there are only a Daniel Kelly, a Eliza Kelly and a Alice Walsh. If Ellen was a widow the holding would be in her name. In the birth records there are only those born in Kilkenny that would be the right age for Kieran Kelly, prior to 1829. There are 46 Kiernan in all born in Ireland that there are records for. Ellen Walsh 143, 0 in Mayo. Margaret Walsh 630, 1 born 1836 Galway However, I think the spelling of Kieran is getting in the way of verifying he is the father of the 1836 Margaret, and got no record nor any siblings also probably because of spelling. Depending on how old Margaret was when she moved to the Wirral she may or may not have gone with her parents. Do you have a census for Birkenhead such as 1851. In 1841 there were 143 Margaret Kelly's born in Ireland but no Kieran Kelly nor is he in the 1871 Census. I have a program that identified irish born persons but only 1841 & 1871. For Kieran to be in the 1871 he would be about 61-71? For a start I would go with the 1851 UK census first, with all names, Ellen maybe easier than Margaret. There are 11 Kelly's still in the telephone directory for Newport and 70 Walsh's. Annette Code Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Diana Thank your for your two replies. I am still trying to sort out the THOMAS COLLINS _ MARY HORAN family from 1854 which is the birth or MICHAEL COLLINS who might be my grandfather. We talked about this during July this year and you gave me the LDS film no. The family seems fine, but to confirm that it is the correct one I need to establish that THOMAS COLLINS was a TAILOR [which was the profession given on Grandfather's wedding cert]. I know that this is on MARY COLLINS birth cert [20 April 1868] but I would like one of the other children's father to be a tailor as well . I know I am hoping for a lot but after all it is Christmas and that would be a nice little gift [Big Grin]!! I have not found their marriage yet!!! Hope you have a good New Year, Again thank you for all your help regards Peter C ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, December 28, 2011 1:19 PM Subject: Re: [IRL-MAYO] Thomas Collins Profession
