It was the fact that your Owens' was connected to County Mayo that caught my attention. My great grandfather Thomas Owens was born in County Mayo in 1840. He married Annie Farrell in 1869 in County Mayo His father was Patrick Owens and his mothers maiden name was Mary Kenny. It is possible that Patrick and Mary may have left Ireland to live in Australia. Thomas and Annie left Ireland to live in Australia. Information has been difficult (almost impossible) to obtain from Irish sources pre 1850. Records show that Annie Farrell was born in Kings Count (also called Birr) Ireland in 1843 and her father was William Farrell and her mothers maiden name was Bridget Heaton. They married about 1829 in Parsontown Ireland. Thomas died in 1912 at Brunswick, Victoria, Australia and Annie also at Brunswick in 1883. Although I realize it is only a remote possibility another Owens researcher may have a connection with this line. I would be delighted to learn if another researcher identifies with this family. That record you cite is the one for the Patrick I am trying to trace. He was the son of Ann Jeffers & Peter Griffin. There are living Griffin relatives (step-brethren)in Ireland in Gorteenmore area. They do not have any details of the Jeffers' Griffins except to indicate all members of the Jeffers/Griffin family emigrated to America. I have found a number of cousin descendants but we have a few lost sheep like Patrick. Nevertheless thanks for your good advice! Caused by one type of potato, other types were OK so depending on what was planted when the blight came depended on having a useless crop. The amount of potato's eaten daily by a working irishman was like 5 lbs. perhaps that's a bit much but it was a pretty amazing amount. The seed potato's carrying the scourge came from America and was spread there, in Ireland, the UK and parts of Europe. The potato blight was already written about in 1830 in Wexford and parts of Wicklow. The famine was unnecessary due to the fact there was plenty of food being produced by Irish farmers but for the gentry to sent to the UK. Cattle, barley, corn etc. were sent to the UK even at the height of the famine. Annette Code Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Look in the Irish/Mayo online telephone directory for names and addresses. www.familysearch.org (use Mayo for place) There are a lot of Patrick Griffin's born in Mayo including this one: Example only: Patrick born 20 March 1878, Gorteenmore fa: Peter and mother Ann Jeffers LDS Film No. C00578-7/256005 You can get copies of records after 1864 from the General Registration Office: www.groireland.ie There are at least three that might fit the criteria if he died in Mayo. Estimated year of birth is based on age given at death, not a birth date. Years of death 1943, 1950, 1950. There are many who went to the USA and appear in several census. I would think despite these records it would be possible to get the right person you maybe able to narrow it down a bit. That is why I suggest the phone book as there may be descendants who know if he stayed in Mayo or went to the US. That at least would give you a starting point. Looked in a 1931 Commercial Directory for Mayo, if he had a business he may have been listed. There is just a Michael Griffin. Yes, I have no doubt that this is the reason my folks came over 1828-1832 (Dukelow's in County Cork) and 1842 (O'Malley's in Mayo)..my Wiggins came much earlier, before 1807. It was a disaster, and there seems to have been no care by England (who I also have ancestors from)...politics/inhumanity doesn't seem to have changed much, has it?? Still happening... Your greats appear to get you back 4-5 generations. This could place your available records at post 1864 which would make it easier since civil records for Catholics started. Before that time, if they are available, a big IF, would only be sacramental records. This would mean you would need a townland/village and/or a landlord, etc. If you could supply dates/approx.dates, places someone might be able to assist you.
