    1. Re: [IRL-MAYO] Help with Rooghan and Kincon in Mayo
    2. Hi Pete, Thanks, this helps a lot. This means that it is plausible to be from Rooghan on Griffiths, but to be 'from' Kincon on church records. If I look at askireland.ie, and look at the the Griffiths map, the plot of land that my 2ggfather lived in seems to just into what is Kincon now, so maybe borders have shifted ... The RC church in Kincon is just a half-mile south of the Rooghan border. Rathreagh townland borders Kincon to the NE of Kincon. In fact, Rathreagh and Rooghan are separated by just a half-mile, representing the townland of Carrowkeel. Pete .................................................... 1. [IRL-MAYO] Help with Rooghan and Kincon in Mayo
    2. Hi all, I am having a little bit of geographic confusion in trying to trace my family. I have my 2nd great grandfather, Bartholomew Loughney, in Rooghan in Rathreagh Parish on Griffiths. However, his marriage took place in Kilfian Parish on 7 Feb 1836, and his wife Jane Duffy was listed as from Kincon, in Kilfian Parish. Bartholomew died in Kinkeen (SP?), Killala district. Jane Duffy Loughney died in 1898 in Kincon, Killala district. Finally, I found a record of an unknown Loughney living in Kilfian in 1815 Tithe Applotment books. My guestion is where exactly is Rooghan? I can find Rathreagh which is near Kincon. Is it likely that these are the same or nearly the same place? Thanks, John

    1. Re: [IRL-MAYO] Help with Rooghan and Kincon in Mayo
    2. Rooghan is a townland in Rathreagh parish (or perhaps it was, as it doesn't show up in Google Maps), and Rathreagh is on the east side of Kilfian parish. If no one on the list can give you a precise location, you might go to mayolibrary.ie and do a search for Rooghan. You'll need an SVG Viewer plug-in from Adobe to view (or you might try e-mailing the library and asking for help). Diane

My mother was Florence Mulcrone, daughter of Anne and David Mulcrone. She was third of 6 children and the only one to leave the Chicago area (when she married my dad, James Southwell. I have been to Westport many times, the first in 1972 when I did the backpacking thing and traveled around. Met Owen, Charlie, Poorack, Jimmy, Dick, anne and more on that trip. Have maintained sporadic contact with Emer Hughes, Blonaid Gannon and Nuala Mullan. I helped my brother Jim and his wife Gayle to plan their first visit to Westport 2 summers ago, connected them with Blonaid and Mary and Anne Hughes (Charlie and Bridie's daughters). They were able to meet many others one evening in the pub and had a grand time. We are recently in touch with Harry Hughes regarding family info on the other sisters of my gran's who emigrated to Chicago. He wants it for the reunion in April. I so wish I could come sometime, but not a good travel time for a teacher, so may! have to wait until I am a retired one. Who are your parents then and what is your name. Are you living there in Ireland, perhaps even in Westport? All the best, Julie ([email protected]) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Laois. The problem with searching for a marriage for them if it took place in Ireland is that it would have been before the start of full civil registration - assuming they were RC. To search parish records for a marriage you would need to have some clues as to where it took place - ideally which parish. Their counties of origin are not close.. and they could have married somewhere in between, or somewhere on the way to England.. We know for sure James Carrollw as born nearby in 1815. We think the family is related to Carrolls who lived in County Cavan.
