    1. Re: [IRL-MAYO] Kelley, Hammond -visit to Mayo
    2. Do as much research as possible before you go so you're not spending precious time in libraries. Unfortunately Newport/Burrishoole church records don't begin until 1872, but you might find the baptisms of some of the older children if you use the rootsireland.ie site and do a search that includes parents' names and parish to eliminate red herrings. Also, civil birth registration began in 1864, so you might look for births of those children born after that date and registered in Newport district on the familysearch.org site. As to Mayo sites, Ballintubber Abbey is fascinating and the Mayo coast is wonderful. Use Google.ie and/or Ireland tour books to get more ideas. Diane

    3. We plan a trip Rosturk area of Mayo this fall. What background searches can I do ahead of time; and what sites, genealogy and otherwise should I not miss. Martin Kelley and wife Catherine Hammond emigrated to US I think in 1884. I don't know port. They married in Newport Chapel in Newport in 1860. How do I get those records while there? I don't want to miss any opportunies to learn more. We plan to visit primarily in the Westport to Mulranny area for a week. Thanks for any support one may offer. An interesting development is coming to light through dna(Genetic Genealogy), namely, not all Hopkins, from the west of Ireland, have the Viking gene from the Norman arrival nor the Scottish gene from the Plantation era. Nor do they have the Naille of Nine Hostages gene. I have 8 markers in common with 3 Hopkins from Mayo. Not sure about how the dating works, but was told the link between us is very old. It was pointed out to me that, due to the amount of time since we had an ancestor in common, he was surprised we shared the same last name and were from the same area in Ireland. We are talking around 1,000 years. I matched a T Hopkins from Boyle, Co Roscommon. The contact person, AR Hopkins, has yet to contact me. I was told by a local historian, all Hopkins come out of Mayo. There is an ancient Irish family, Hobbigans, who's name is translated Hopkins, Hopkinson, Hopkin. They were from West Meath and associated with the O'Farrell clan. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My gggrandfather Martin Garven and Margaret Keane their first daughter was born at the the townland of Raheenbar in the parish of Islandeady near the town of Castlebar in 1844. Children Mary,Bridget and Thomas were born in Ireland. In time for the 1851 census the family located to Perth Scotland. My ggrandfather John was born in 1855 and his sister Kate(how irish!) in 1859. In 1851 living with this family was Margarets parents John Keane and Bridget Reilly two unmarried sisters and two other Keane relatives ,13 in total living in two rooms. Martin was a cooper by trade, his son John a brassmolder and boxmaker. The 1861 census has children Mary, Bridget and Thomas living nearby with a Micheal Garavan listed as Grandfather ,while Martins death cert. has his father as Thomas and mother Mary Bain, perhaps a uncle instead. John Garven my ggrandfather at the time of his marriage was living in Glasgow working as a brassmolder. Kilcommon (Kilcommon-Erris, Belmullet, Kiltane, and Ballycroy Catholic) and Oughaval (Westport Catholic)parishes also had Hogans, so that might be the place to start. You can search an index of baptismal records for free on rootsireland.ie, though you have to pay to view record transcripts. I'd suggest starting with Julia, since it's the least common name, and see if you get any hits. If you do, then narrow down by parents' names. If that matches too, should be your family.
