    1. [IRL-MAYO] question on RC birth reports vs Civil birth reports
    2. Hi all, I found a Civil Birth report for a great uncle, as well as the RC birth/baptism. They had slightly different dates. The Civil was later than the Roman Catholic report. Any ideas? Would the Roman Catholic report be the birth or the baptism? Would the Civil report be when the report was made? thanks, John

I see your John called one of his sons Matthew this can be sometimes a clue as he may have called him after his own father. I am looking for my John Moran, b July 12 1829 that I can't find any info about his emigration to Canada, family or siblings. His immigration date according to the 1901 Canadian census is 1849 and he does show up on the 1851 census as well. I will be going to Ireland in May and will be going to the Mayo Family History Centre in Ballinrobe but thought it might be nice to have a little information before I get there. Their Irish Civil records can be obtained from the County Roscommon GRO on line. GOOGLE it. You will see on the far RT Tool bar Births. Go there. Cost and instructions on obtaining them with correct form to use also. If you use them, a credit card can be used. If you go through the Record Office in Castlebar County Mayo, you cannot. Since you live in the UK, take a trip over on holiday to Mayo. The 1901 and 1911 census are on line, you might check out data there. Griffith's Valuation for Mayo was 1858. Since you know the townland, check that out. Also, GOOGLE the townland and see if you can find the church of your ancestors denomination. Post a letter requesting sacramental information; include a donation. Check out Familysearch.org That site has Irish records. You might find the data which will help you get civil records. But will try. Pre 1864 records are sacramental. Therefore, if they do exist, you will need to know religion, townland, name of parent and/or siblings. Griffiths Valuation might help if your ancestors were still in Ireland at the time. 1824 Tithe Applotments may have data. However, again you would need the name of county, townland, landlord. Not all Tithe records have family data but you might luck out. If your ancestor was Protestant and married in Ireland, there are Civil marriage records which started in 1845. Mayo, some of whom changed the spelling to Burns. I wish to offer this person a free DNA test to be used to trace the origins of this family, the earliest known members of which lived in Castleconnor parish in the late 1600s. I once was informed that there is a Burns descendant of this family still living in Erris, and another person said a descendant now is living in California, but I am unable to recontact either reporter. I will be in Ireland in May and am anxious to find out once and for all if there is such a person in Erris (or elsewhere in Ireland). If anyone knows of a Bourne(s) I could test, I will be grateful. This new tool of Genetic Genealogy, is not a replacement for old fashioned research of paper records. But, How many times have we hit a brick wall or fork in the road with multiple choices? To have rock solid evidence saying, "Here", not there, then aligning the paper with the facts. You mention the name Burn, Burne, Byrne. There is an excellent example. Wouldn't it be nice to know if they are linked to the Northwest Irish group, southern Irish group, Atlantic Modal? etc. Same for the Hopkins(English, Scot, Welsh, German, Norman or Irish?). In the last 3-5 years discoveries have spead up at an amazing pace. Charts/graphs can't keep up with all the discoveries. This has fueled new reseach of the paper records. They go hand in hand. Old theories and common myths are being destroyed and new ones, along with books, are being formulated. Thanks for responding, Tina. This is a very exciting time to be doing research on the families.
