Just wish we could have found a common thread. You do mention a marriage date for my grandparents, William and Lola? You have the date as 5 June 1900? and that Lola was the daughter of Cornelius Burns and Catherine Cavanaugh? May I ask where and how you found this info? I was never quite sure of their marriage date and was not sure of the spelling of Catherine's maiden name. So, as it is, you have given me several bits of info that I did not have and I thank you very much, Linda Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Through a backwards search I find that "my" Mariah was a Widow by 1880. However, a small portion of the data I culled is accurate for your Thomas and Maria Durkin of Niagara Falls. As follows: In 1900, the Durkin Family lives in Niagara Falls, NY, on Eric Avenue with a boarder named Borus Bingman. Thomas owns a home (with a mortgage), and his occupation is "Papermaker". In 1910, the Durkin Family lives in Niagara Falls, NY and they have a 50-year-old boarder named Katherine Pond in the household. And the children's birth records I also believe to be accurate, as they match the names on the NY Census: 1. William (Given name: Guilielnum Carolum b. May 11, 1876, c. 6/18/1876, m. Lolam Burns [child of Cornelius Burns and Catherine Cavanaugh] on June 5, 1900); 2 & 3. Mary/Mariam {New York Birth records show TWO (2) Mariams. The first- Mariam Fredericam b. November 27, 1872, c. December 22, 1872; the second, Mariam (no middle name) b. April 24, 1879, c. June 1, 1879}; 4. Fredricum Josephum (b. January 17, 1882, c. January 22, 1882); 5. Thomas/Thomam (b. March 1885, c. April 5, 1885); and 6. Elizabetham Marie (b. October 25, 1888, c. November 18, 1888, m. to Edward Joseph Mondor [son of John B. Mondor and Maria Kelly] on May 8, 1916). I apologize for erroneous posting, I hope Elizabeth's marriage record makes up for it. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My experience hass been that the Catholic birth/baptism record is likely to be the most accurate. A baby was baptised quickly after birth, as an unbaptised child who died would not be allowed to be buried in the Catholic Cemetery....hence, all the small crosses near the entrancee to many such] cemeteries. Their was a penalty for waiting too long to register a birth with the civil authorities in addition to the normal registration fee, so parents who were facing payment of the penalty often changed the date of birth to fall within the required registration period. They had slightly different dates. The Civil was later than the Roman Catholic report. Any ideas? Would the Roman Catholic report be the birth or the baptism? Would the Civil report be when the report was made? thanks, John ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Maria was also born in 1844 (her parents were born in Ireland). Her age at time of death is 77 yrs. They both would have been around 13 yrs of age at the birth of John in 1857..I don't believe we are researching the same Thomas and Maria..........drats!!! Niagara Falls records are few and far between and I have not made any progress for a very long time...maybe we will make a connection yet, I sure hope so. One thing I learned as a volunteer is to count on census data being "off". 1. The death date of 1936 throws me. Could he have lived to be 100? I have Thomas' birth date as between 1833 and 1846. 2. The marriage date of 1871 from the NY Census seems off too, since I have him with Mariah Durkin as far back as 1860 in PA. 3. The 1860 and 1870 census in PA shows Mariah born in Ireland, then the 1900 NY censuses show Mariah as being born in New York to parents born in Ireland, and in 1910 being born in New York to {I can't make out what it says} Pu? English parents. I would love to send you scans of the census pages I am working from. I still think we are on to something because 4. the Thomas and Mariah listed as parents of Mary Ann (1861) in the 1860 & 1870 census disappear from Pennsylvania records in 1880, and the 1890 census is lost, then in 1900 a Thomas and Mariah Durkin with the same birth dates appear in Niagara Falls. 5. I feel like I am looking for "John Smith" with no other data!! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. According to census records from 1860 through 1920, and New York State Birth Records I have found the following information: Thomas was born in Ireland between 1833 and 1846. Different censuses show differing birth dates, but always in Ireland. I do not know the County, although family rumor is "County Mayo". According to the 1910 census, Thomas immigrated to America between 1850 and 1851. In 1860, Thomas Durkin and Mariah Anna Faulkner are living in Stroudsburg, PA with their children John (1857), Margaret E. (1859), and Mary Ann (1861). Thomas is a Farmer with $75 worth of personal property. In 1870, Thomas and Mariah live in Tobyhanna Mills, Paradise, PA. Thomas is a Farmer with $400 worth of real estate and $300 worth of personal property, and he can not read or write. The Durkin's have a 21-year-old boarder named Hannah Coffman living with them. (Item of note: Mary Ann Durkin married a Theodore Coffman.) In 1880, I cannot find hide or hair of them... The 1890 census is "lost". In 1900, the Durkin Family has moved to Niagara Falls, NY, and they live on Eric Avenue with a boarder named Borus Bingman. Thomas can now read and write, owns a home (with a mortgage), and has changed occupation to "Papermaker". In 1910, the Durkin Family still lives in Niagara Falls, NY and they have a 50-year-old boarder named Katherine Pond in the household. In 1920, they may live in Jefferson, NY, but I am having trouble sourcing an accurate record. ~ Mariah Anna Faulkner is the Wife of Thomas Durkin. She has been a little bit harder to track. Census records vary on her place of birth, listing both New York and Ireland, however, all census records indicate that her parents were both born in Ireland. Additionally, 99% of records do list Mariah's year of birth as 1830. The 1900 New York census record shows Mariah the mother 7, 5 living. However, this conflicts with New York State Birth Records for Thomas and Mariah Durkin's children, and census records are usually the ones that have erroneous information noted by careless census takers... The children's names I have been able to find are: 1. John (1857); 2. Margaret E. (1859); 3. Mary Ann (1861); 4. William (Given name: Guilielnum Carolum b. May 11, 1876, c. 6/18/1876, m. Lolam Burns [child of Cornelius Burns and Catherine Cavanaugh] on June 5, 1900); 5 & 6. Mary/Mariam (b. April 1879) {New York Birth records show TWO (2) Mariams. The first- Mariam Fredericam b. November 27, 1872, c. December 22, 1872; the second, Mariam (went by Mary, no middle name) b. April 24, 1879, c. June 1, 1879}; 7. Fredricum Josephum (b. January 17, 1882, c. January 22, 1882); 8. Thomas/Thomam (b. March 1885, c. April 5, 1885); and 9. Elizabetham Marie (b. October 25, 1888, c. November 18, 1888, m. to Edward Joseph Mondor [son of John B. Mondor and Maria Kelly] on May 8, 1916). SOURCE: All data above should be considered UNVERIFIED.
