Pat: The CD-ROM of County Longford Residents Prior to the Famine is an e-book edition of the printed book. Its "pages" look exactly the same as the 439-page hardbound volume with color dust jacket. It is viewed using Adobe Reader 6.0, which is resident on the CD. Aside from the CD's basic advantages of portability (vs. a large book) and price, you can use Adobe's search function to find citations of any surname or townland name within the work more efficiently than by thumbing through the hardcover edition. After searching on a word or phrase, Adobe generates a list of all occurrences of that term, hyperlinked to the pages on which it appears. Also, the CD can serve as a large print edition, since one can use Adobe's zoom function to enlarge each page over 400%. Other than that, you're getting the same information as with the printed edition. Please note that the CD-ROM is formatted for PC platform, due to digital rights management requirements.
