However, there are two townlands somewhat to the east of Drumlish called Cartron Upper and Cartron Lower, so these may have some connection with the place you are looking for. 3. What I sent you was copied from WEB sites, so I would assume the author of that quote was from British Northern Ireland or at least wished to distinguish from the Republic of Ireland So from that point of view yes Longford is in Southern Ireland.(not a very common term) However, geographically looking at the entire Island, Longford is slightly above the geographical center of the entire island, including the Northern Ireland counties. 3. Mike and June, Interesting that you bring up the term "Southern Ireland." I have found it used a lot in census and other materials from about 1915 to 1940. My parents (born 1912) were always very careful to say we were from SOUTHERN Ireland. Undoubtedly it was to distinguish us from Northern Ireland and before the term "Republic of Ireland" was widely used. An interesting parallel: My paternal grandmother's family (CREAMER) came from Ireland to Canada (PEI) in 1820. My dad and his siblings were born in B.C. then moved to the US (Oregon). The census records for Oregon are very careful to give their place of birth as "ENGLISH Canada." What's in a word??
