Cynthia, I do not recognize a townland called Bally St. Michael in Longford or elsewhere, but bally is the word for town in Irish. Templemichael is a Catholic parish in Longford town, and I suppose that it might have been called Bally St. Michael by local people at some stage, although 1850-60 is rather late for an "unofficial" townland name. Also if the grandfather was a Protestant, and Church of Ireland records were the source of the birth record in question, it's possible that their parish covering the same territory as Templemichael might have had a somewhat different, but still related, name. Just an idea.
