Im researching my mothers family. I trace her family back to the borders of Roscommon and Longford at Cloonmore, Whitehall, Tarmonbarry, Roscommon. Only the Shannon divides it from County Longford and the family became identified with Longford Town. They are named Magennis in the Griffiths Valuation. The spelling in this century has been McGuinness. My earliest record is of Jack McGuinness b 1805 who married Biddy Gearty. They had children, Martin, Catherine, Elizabeth, Anne (who married somebody Leonard), Mary, Frank. Their son Martin (b. cir 1830) married Rose Farrell and their children were: 1) John McGuinnessb. c. 1854, Married Lizzie Gearty (a next door neighbour) emigrated to USA , had children Catherine, rose, Margaret, Francis (Fossie) b. cir 1880, d. bef 1951 in Colorado. We have no knowledge of this branch of the family in the USA 2) George McGuinness, b 1854 3) Thomas McGuinness b. cir 1865 d. 1944, buried Ballymaccormack. m. 1896 Catherine Cox (b. 8 -Oct1870) daughter of James Cox and Julia Gavigan. [My grandparents] 4) Joseph McGuinness (b. cir 1865, died May 1922) m. Catherine Farrell no issue 5) Eliza McGuinness (b. 29th March 1865) m. cir 1890 in Chicago, John Gilmartin (b. County Mayo). (Address in 1919 was 509 Albany Avenue, Chicago 6) Margaret McGuinness (b. 29th March 1865 - twin to Eliza) m. Patrick Lyons 7) Francis McGuinness (b. 23 Feb 1867) married Catherine Powell, no issue (Joe McGuinness 1865-1922 was imprisoned for his part in the 1916 Rising. In 1917 while still in prison in England he was elected as Sinn Fein Member of Parliament for South Longford. He was a minister in the first Irish Dail in 1919. He and his brother Frank were again interned in 1919. According to a family notebook Joe McGuinness, prior to 1916, taught Irish language for six years in New York and Chicago. I presume this was with some Irish Republican/Cultural/Gaelic League organisations. Any suggestions for further research on this unrecorded gap in his life?) I would welcome information on the families of John and Eliza who emigrated. Going further back, does anyone on the list have information on how this family which at one time I presume was based in Ulster came to be in Roscommon/Longford where the name is quite uncommon.
