I am researching the decendents of Patrick Shanley and Anne Byrne of Killashee, County Longford. Patrick died abt. 1844, leaving Anne with eight children, including twins, who also died. The brother of Patrick was a civil engineer living in Dublin, and he wrote letters back & forth to a cousin, John Shanley, in Brooklyn, arranging for the surviving children to sail from Liverpool to New York. John Shanley & wife were to raise them until they came of age. One of the daughters stayed in Ireland & became a religious sister. One of the sons, John Shanley, served in the Civil War in the famous 14th of Brooklyn, Michael Shanley, Anne Shanley (Wall), and Frances Shanley (Higham), all eventually ended up in Jersey City, New Jersey.
