Hi there ... :)) I have a few questions about clans ... does one have to bear the name to be in a clan? My gr-gr-grandfather was a Hagarty, and I found that Hagart was/is a sept in the Scots clan Ross. How far back can your ancestor be, for you to belong to a clan? My gr-gr-grandfather's name was James Hagarty from Longford, Ireland, and he emigrated to PA, USA in the mid-1800's. He was born in the 1830's. Can someone from Longford belong to a Scot clan?
