    2. Donald Filan
    3. I am looking for a good researcher or genealogist to gather information on a Michael Filan. The information I have is that he was born about 1797, was from the Townland of Longfield, Parish Mostrim, County Longford. I believe he emigrated to the states sometime around 1849-1852 with three(3) or four(4) sons named Edward, John, William and maybe Joseph. Michael Filan was my gggrandfather and I am trying to verify that he is the same Michael Filan that originated in County Longford. I have sent basically the same message to County Longford. Thus far I have received no takers.I am not looking for a free ride, I am willing to pay for this service. Don Filan

Smith maried Eliza Diamond and they settled in Ontario, Canada, along with James Diamond and wife Abigail (Wilson) Diamond, about 1835. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Also interested in clearing up confusion over children of James and Abigail. Apparently children born in Ireland were William, Elizabeth (Eliza) and John. Canadian census shows William and Eliza, born in Ireland and Mary Jane, born in Canada 1837. No further record of John. Did he die in infancy in Ireland?

I’m researching my mother’s family. I trace her family back to the borders of Roscommon and Longford at Cloonmore, Whitehall, Tarmonbarry, Roscommon. Only the Shannon divides it from County Longford and the family became identified with Longford Town. They are named Magennis in the Griffiths Valuation. The spelling in this century has been McGuinness. My earliest record is of Jack McGuinness b 1805 who married Biddy Gearty. They had children, Martin, Catherine, Elizabeth, Anne (who married somebody Leonard), Mary, Frank. Their son Martin (b. cir 1830) married Rose Farrell and their children were: 1) John McGuinnessb. c. 1854, Married Lizzie Gearty (“a next door neighbour”) emigrated to USA , had children Catherine, rose, Margaret, Francis (Fossie) b. cir 1880, d. bef 1951 in Colorado. We have no knowledge of this branch of the family in the USA 2) George McGuinness, b 1854 3) Thomas McGuinness b. cir 1865 d. 1944, buried Ballymaccormack. m. 1896 Catherine Cox (b. 8 -Oct1870) daughter of James Cox and Julia Gavigan. [My grandparents] 4) Joseph McGuinness (b. cir 1865, died May 1922) m. Catherine Farrell – no issue 5) Eliza McGuinness (b. 29th March 1865) m. cir 1890 in Chicago, John Gilmartin (b. County Mayo). (Address in 1919 was 509 Albany Avenue, Chicago 6) Margaret McGuinness (b. 29th March 1865 - twin to Eliza) m. Patrick Lyons 7) Francis McGuinness (b. 23 Feb 1867) married Catherine Powell, no issue (Joe McGuinness 1865-1922 was imprisoned for his part in the 1916 Rising. In 1917 while still in prison in England he was elected as Sinn Fein Member of Parliament for South Longford. He was a minister in the first Irish Dail in 1919. He and his brother Frank were again interned in 1919. According to a family notebook Joe McGuinness, prior to 1916, taught Irish language for six years in New York and Chicago. I presume this was with some Irish Republican/Cultural/Gaelic League organisations. Any suggestions for further research on this unrecorded gap in his life?) I would welcome information on the families of John and Eliza who emigrated. Going further back, does anyone on the list have information on how this family which at one time I presume was based in Ulster came to be in Roscommon/Longford where the name is quite uncommon. Richard Callanan London, England.

    2. Robert & Neta Jane Doris
    3. I am looking for information about Matthew DORIS, born 1800 Newtown Forbes, Co. Longford, IRE. The information that we have now says that he was a Catholic priest and that he left the priesthood to marry Annie MCGUIRE. We don't know if they married in Co Longford or if they married in New York after they arrived. I tend to think it was in Co Longford. Annie MCGUIRE was born 1818 in Co Longford. Their first child was born in New York in Nov 1838. A cousin on a tour through Co Longford 3-4 years ago met a John Doris who said he remembered hearing the story. But the tour bus had to leave and he didn't get to talk but a few minutes and not long enough to get into the family far enough. Is there someway someone in Longford could find out anything for me. Thank you muchly... Neta Jane Doris njdoris@pld.com

    3. Searching for information on Susanah Claffey, born about 1805, probably in Longford County, Ireland. Her father James Claffey's Intent to Naturalize in 1817 stated that he came from there. Have not been able to establish a definite birth year. She is listed as female child between 10-15 in 1820 Fed Census Huntingdon Co, Pa. She would have traveled to America in 1817 and landed in the port of New York in August 1817. She married Jacob Mulvahil in 1825. Remainder of her family moved to Washington County, Pa about that time and most are buried here. No further information available. Appreciate any help. Carol Ann Claffey Mounts in Washington Co, PA

    2. Chris McGrath
    3. Hello everyone I've just joined this site and I'm researching HESLANs, spelt in various ways, from the area. Bernard Heslan was my gggrandfather. He must have been born 1830-31. In 1847 he enlisted in the Royal Irish Fusiliers at Maguiresbridge and his service record says he came from Dromard Parish. There was also a John Heslan enlisted at the same time and place who was a year older, also from Longford. I have detailed records of Bernard from 1847 onwards and I know from his marriage certificate that his father was Patrick Heslan, linen weaver. I would like to contact anyone researching Heslans in the area. I would especially like to find records of birth for Bernard, John and Patrick, what was the local RC church, and anything about Dromard, linen weavers and so on. Any help much appreciated.
